Y'know, I'm really surprised at how few people recommend Steel and Obsidian checkered floors. Like seriously, it looks even better than Obsidian/Wool and is much more demonstrative of wealth and luxury. Is it really just that costly? Also for max posh try Steel/gold. Yeeaaah. Oh wait you said no materials like that. Ahem, anyway! Pretty much my biggest recommendation is just to stick with similar looking materials. I like to use smoothstone/cobble/tile combinations myself, or plank/trunk. Maybe try something liiike...
Also have you seen this?. Crafting table checks look awesome, not to mention how functional that would be.

Yeah, you have to be really wealthy to afford something that doesn't exist. Iron, on the other hand...
On-topic, I use this wonderful and very creative pattern:

I tried being extremely civil and British for a while. Don't worry, I'm better now.
Yeah, I use that amazing pattern for all of my mineshafts. And to the poster above you, iron is abundant so I'll try that out right now actually. The pillowy noise the cloth makes when you walk on it is starting to get on my nerves.
How large an area are you doing? My floor is mostly grass with light blocks put in every 6th block. I like the look of grass, and I think the light blocks are a very nice way to light the room. Plus I like the look of the pattern formed by the light dropping off. But I'm not sure how well this would transfer to smaller house sized areas. I took a screenshot but for some reason the screenshot turned out darker than my actual game.
Edited to add: Oh, and of course, any pattern that uses grass will cause animals to spawn. You can see some cows off to the right there. But I like the animals. And this screenshot got me killed. The first time I tried it I went up and placed a block a decent ways up so I could see more of the floor. Taking the screenshot crashed minecraft, so it didn't save me adding in that block, I load back in and splat.
