(ok, this is just a prototype, it could be much, much better, but I thought what I'd done so far was good enough to share)
I've always liked messing around with boats in Minecraft, going full speed and watching the shore fly by is good fun. So then I thought, what about building a speedboat course you could have a race in? And thats what I did.
So to start off with, here's the starting dock. There are four spots, so up to four people could possibly have a race in multilplayer.
I added doors in front of the docks to keep the boats in, a technique I found useful for my wharf on another world to stop boats floating out to sea. I wanted to rig all the gates up to a single switch, so that all doors would open at once to signal the start of the race. Unfortunately, the docks are spaced too close toghether and I can't do that, but the wiring is there in one dock as proof of concept.
The gates are open and we're off!
Here we have our first obstacle (yes, this is also an obstacle course): rapids! Also here are the spectator stands, where you can watch the race from.
If you're feeling a little hungry during the race, why not head to the concession stand for a snack?
Back to the race, we round the corner and find the next obstacle: flaming debris
Oh crap! The boat's on fire! Abandon ship!
Ok, back on track
Down this next part and... what the?
OUT OF THE WAY YOU STUPID PIG!
... and so we hit the third obstacle: the animal crossing
Continuing down the left and... whats that?
OH GOD WHIRLPOOL
Past the whirlpool, we reach cacti corner. Touching a cactus block will destroy your boat, so best be careful here
And now, we're on the home straight.
I'm winner!
To finish off with, we have the winner's podium, complete with gold, silver and bronze medals (just use your imagination, okay?)
But wait you ask, there were four boats and only three spots on the podium? Where does the 4th contestant stand? I'm glad you asked
Those who come in last place are disgraces and are cast into the pit of fire.
So that is my speedboat course so far. I didn't implement nearly half the cool ideas I had, and things could be improved in a lot of areas, and a lot more fun stuff could added (like a downhill rocky rapids section, or underground section) with some more work. This could also work as a multiplayer game, players could bet on the outcome and winner takes all. You could even play dirty, and attack the other players with your sword as you pass, or try and destory their boat. Set them on fire and make them waste time hopping into the water to douse themselves, or just pepper them with arrows. There's a lot of potential here, and I'm sure someone much more talented at Minecraft than me will come out with something awesome and blow mine out of the water.
Note: you should put in the title that it is picture heavy XD
Love your idea. I think the next thing to be added should be a rapids portion, but you may need to start on the top of a cliff or something. Really inventive ideas on the obstacles IMO. I'm working on a tutorial on how to make superspeed canals (sort of, kinda hard to explain), and it would be pretty epic if you added that to the final straightaway. Anyways, good job.

And the doors will keep the boat in when closed, while still allowing you to get out when they're open? That's pretty sweet too, might need to use that.

Thanks. The superspeed canal sounds interesting, I'll definately see if I can work that in.

Pretty awesome.

Yeah, despite the doors blocking water, the boats have no problem making it out. They can even make it across a double-door section (well, by that I mean you can make it across the empty gap, but actually fitting between the two open doors is a real challenge, thats why I went with a 3-wide dock).
Is it just me, or are some of the pictures broken?
From what I can see it looks really fun! did you make it in single or multiplayer?
Just needs making more ascetically pleasing and possibly more spacing to release the gates simultaneously and it'll be brilliant :biggrin.gif:
The first pic is not showing for me either. I'll have to fix it when I get home later.
I made this in single player, at first I just wanted a little course I could speed around in for fun, but then the idea of a multiplayer racetrack came to me, so I started to design it with that in mind.
As for aesthetics, I agree its not the prettiest of things, but what do you think I could improve? I went overboard on the lights simply so that the track is clearly visible at night. I know some of the corners could be smoothed out too.
I loved it, great idea and well executed.
Only thing I would add is another set of grandstands at the end of the race, (Yay I won.....now where are all the people to cheer for me?) and a judge/official's box at the end so you know who won.

(I didn't know you could light boats on fire)
Anyway, I would love to race my boat in this but...
yea..
Well thought out and planned, good work.
Yep, putting a Minecraft sig in the forums. Cause it's that awesome
