I just got this game yesterday, and I've been exploring this huge natural tunnel for about an hour. So far I've managed to gather a whole pile of redstone dust, plus lots of iron, gold, coal, and diamonds. I want to get out, but even though I tried to leave a trail of torches behind me.. I somehow managed to get lost.
I really don't want to suicide since I gathered a ton of good materials, so is there any other way to get out? I tried digging a staircase up but I hit water and the whole thing flooded.
If you have any wood with you, make a chest and place all your valubles inside while you search for an exit. If you die, all your stuff is safe.
Digging up is dangerous, but it's also the quickest way to the surface. If you hit water, that may mean you've tunneled out under the ocean and you're home free, or you just hit a pool in some cave above. If you have the balls, swim up there and see where it takes you.
Find a dry place where you can dig a stairways straight up. You might also want to build a chest to store your stuff, as previously mentioned. And beware the skeletons, they love caves.

I remembered trying that... drowned under a sheet of ice. However, unless you are digging under an old snow theme save, this is a great idea.
"Dig up stupid" - that's a Simpsons quote not being mean, I just love using it.
If you have enough wood/picks with you find the heights point you can and start digging diagonally up. If you don't think you have enough wood/picks do the same thing but at the heighest section of dirt you can find. If you run out of torches don't worry, monsters can not spawn close to you so they will not really spawn and chase you up the path. So you can do this in almost total darkness.
When you reach the surface, if it is night just wait in your cave. Make a small hole to see out of and wait for daytime. Next time you go exploring underground try to leave markers so you know how to find your way back. There are several ways you can do this, I'll list a couple of the ones i find effective.
- cobblestone rarely occurs natually, so you can make markers using it while exporing. If you enter a chamber with 4 exits place some cobble near the way you entered the room from. This way you can trace the cobble back to where you started. If you need to fill holes or cavities use dirt so that all the cobble in the cave are markers to avoid confusion.
- place 2 torches directly above anywhere you want to mark. This is effective becuse you can see the torches from a distance, but it cuts into your resources more than cobble.
I made it out! Thanks for all the tips, guys. The compass helped a lot, with that I was able to get my bearings and find a dry place to dig up.
I'll keep your advice in mind for future cave-exploring ;]
I usually place a torch every 5 blocks, it seems like a waste but it helps a lot. I also place a few redstone torches to mark the exit, because in a winding tunnel it could be hard to lose the exit.
I also read a tip on another forum, only place torches on the right side of the tunnel, so you can easily retrace your steps.
well i used to place torches will nilly, but when i found a cave so freaking big with over 40 shafts, I needed a good way to get out, what did i do instead of markers? I place torches only on the right or only on the left so if i want out i follow my torches and make sure that there on my right / left. I like this method alot cause it simplifies things and your markers might not send you into a different shaft you marked for diamonds or so.
Hope this helps later, and not the 2 torch method is a great way of marking exits, I generally tend to torch both sides of my wall in the starter shaft if i find it splits alot, so i know if im finally close.

I will now write a witty signature in the futile attempt someone reads it, if this is the case than I have inevitably succeeded in mastering the short attention span of forum - ooh look squirrel!

The redstone torch idea is brilliant! I'm definitely going to consider that.
+ Pro, redstone is plentiful and prevents waisting coal
- Con, would require me carrying an extra item at all times
I also have another suggestion for cave exploring. If a tunnel leads to a dead end and you don't think you will ever want to return to it wall it off at the start of the passage with dirt. If you enter a room with multiple passages and want to explore them all eventually but not right now wall each passage off with cobble. The cobble wall will serve as a reminder to tear it down and explore later, while making finding your way thru the caves easier in the mean time. If you do eventually open the passage back and and explore and find nothing of interest wall it off again but this time with dirt so it no longer stands out.
Well, seems the OP found his way out, but lemme post this here anyway for future reference.
Usually, people don't want to suicide because they are carrying diamonds and other valuables.
But sometimes, it can't be averted. This is my backup plan (if you have INVedit)
1.open INVedit.
2. open Minecraft.
3. start a new world in Minecraft.
4. as soon as it generates, save&quit.
5. In INVedit, open up your world in which you're lost and click, "save to world(new world)" without the quotes.
6. close INVedit, reopen your lost world, and suicide.
7. respawn, save&quit.
8. Reopen INVedit, open up save of new world.
9. Click "save to (world you suicided in)" without quotes.
10. Reopen Minecraft.
11. Open up save, complete with fully regenerated health and all your items.
12. ???
13. Profit!
I don't really consider this cheating so much as I consider it "inventory backup."
This works when regular backups just won't do (or you're too lazy to make one).

Actually, that's the best mental image ever. A dying, drowning man stuffing his face from a massive wall of cake, and carving out a monstrous underwater cake picture. I'd pay to watch that irl.

Redstone torches arent as bright as normal torches, and with normal torches aroudn easy to overlook, and assumming the cave is lower than normal ground its not bright enough to stop mob spawns.... so you could be hugging a the cobblestone blocking off is a great idea, ill heave tor rember that cause numerous paths overwhelm me, pesonally if i use redstone torches in a cave i make a small clock circuit to the flash on and off, with normal torches nearby to prevent mobs, but flashing is still noticeable.

Yea, I wanted to make fun of him so bad, but then I remembered being stuck for at least an hour in one of my mines and probably thirty minutes in another one. I just kept running around until I found the way out, but I like the red torches idea. I might just use them when my shaft hits a cave.
steps:
1.pick a block where you want out
2.use a pickaxe on the block directly above you
3.do #2 until you cant reach
4. stack under you by jumping and right clicking at the same time until you hit your head
5. repeat 2-4 until you are free!
(if you hit water)
6.swim up
(if snow level with ice on water)
7. quickly break ice to free yourself!

How will a compass help underground? Did you even read the OP?

I don't want to know.
you have to dig up out of the cave and THEN you make a compass.

1.pick a block where you want out
