I've been thinking about this for a while now. I mean, sure, when you go into caves on anything other than peaceful and find yourself surrounded by darkness, a "TWANG" sound will make anyone squeal. But why? I mean, it's just a game. I don't squeal as much when I play games such as COD or BF2, although the enemies in both share the same motivation -- killing you. What makes Minecraft so special? One reason I think this is different is that it emulates pre-antiquity eras so well that it invokes your most primordial fears. The Minecraft world might be all fun and games for us now, but say, 10,000-20,000 years back, to the early humans, their lives used to be exactly like the one experienced by you in Minecraft. They, too, were forced to see refuge during the nights, or were forced to scour the land for nourishments. They, too, were forced to live off the land to build their structures. They, too, had to hunt livestock for needed resources. They, too, needed light for survival. Why is it that when you hear a zombie moan in a cave and you can't see it, you experience either fear or frustration? It's because your ancestors faced the same thing -- but in real life. They might hear the roar of a creature and might not be able to see it, which would send them into a frenzy to save their own lives. That is THE most amazing thing I find about Minecraft -- it invokes your most primordial survival instincts in a way that no other game has been able to do.

I just killed a Creeper with a TNT explosion. I feel good.
1. Place TNT on ground
2. Place pressure plate on top of it
3. Lure Creeper
4. ????
5. REVENGE
6. PROFIT!
Its psychological. You are master of your world, you can punch down trees, and level mountains with a feather. But you are mortal. You can be killed, and you fear that. You fear those creatures who want your blood, and can get it, even when you are inside a suit of diamond, bow and arrow in hand.
- enemies come in random
- you are attached to those 'lots of items' in your inventory. Most games that kill you either means you reload a save file or lose some minor stuffs like weapon and armors.

I guess, but why do you fear dying even when you have nothing of value? I mean, I get freaked out when I come face to face with a zombie/skeleton during the night even when I am carrying only dirt blocks.

I find it to be immersive, more than truly scary. The atmosphere is well done in Minecraft. It's very easy to drop yourself into the world; you're not moving a little dude so much as you're there yourself. To me it's like a good movie; you know it isn't real, but you can easily suspend your disbelief and get into the world that's presented. This is also that same vibe you get playing good racing games, where you suddenly notice you're turning the controller (even without SIXAXIS) and leaning into the curves while sitting on the couch.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.

It's the sounds that scare me, I wish there was a way to turn off the scary sounds without turning off all sound... It would be much easier to play at night with the lights off =)
Here's the thing. In CoD you KNOW there's about to be action, you're prepared for it. In MineCraft the fear factor comes from having no idea when/where you're going to get jumped by

Tip: Keep your diamonds off your bar and in your bags. You may accidently drop 10 of them into the lava. Uncool. /Facepalm

I'll agree with that. A lot of the immersion comes from the fact that the world is entirely random. However, I still find it scary just because it's completely random. Anything that happens involving mobs and such isn't at all planned, and because of that there's no way to know what to expect.

I counter-agree. :biggrin.gif: That random element is what helps you get into the game; you have to think and plan and pay attention instead of just going "oh, it's the Cave Encounter 2; I'll do my Anti-CE2 thing." Shootemups are notorious for predictability like Vadnarr mentioned; in MP you're ready for shooting right away, and SP modes are way worse since the badguys are almost ALWAYS doing the exact same thing every time. That random element in Minecraft does just what you said. Creepers don't even need to be in the same chunk for you to worry about them; just knowing they exist and how they operate is enough to make you look around.

It's not scary in my opinion but it sure will startle the hell out of you and make you jump occasionally when you aren't expecting that creeper to be in your face when you turn around. For being a game of blocks Minecraft is extremely immersive and I find myself more attached to my items and structures then I have ever been in any other game including MMORPGS (admittingly I haven't ever been a huge fan of them though). Knowing that you can lose any given item for good after spending so much time getting it (diamonds, ect) has a real psychological effect on you. I just wish that the enemies were a little more intelligent and could really do some damage if you weren't careful.
Damn look at that Creeper go. He haulin' ass! That thing come by my house, I kill it! That little sheep-lookin' thing just got blown up! Damn nature, you scary!

Haha yeah I find myself looking "around the corner" at my monitor while slowly moving around a corner, in minecraft. I don't even have the 3D on and it still gives me that immersive (wow spellchecker says immersive isn't a word) feeling.
It can be scary when you make a plan, you gather your resources, you adventure out, and every block you take away from your spawn you know that it'll take that much time and maybe resources to get your invested time and resources back incase you lose it due to the sheer randomness of the environment. It demands a constant stream of awareness when spelunking or climbing a deathly high mountain, or running from a spider while trying to stop it from hugging your face, or even when you are safe from a mob sitting right infront of you, you still feel the pressure.
Atleast when it's on hard anyway, I never play peaceful/easy and try to survive at the same time, thats ripping half of the game, out of the game right thur.
When survival comes out online it'll be nice to see collective groups fending off mobs and tackling issues together to make it less "scary". Or will it? Will they just.. send more mobs!?
I crept out of peaceful mode with nothing but a stone sword thinking, "I want some string". So in the darkness I went when I heard TWANG. I freaked out span around a few time and lost 7 hearts fighting it. On Easy. So I felt barely accomplished when SSssss... Oh shi-BLAM. And thats why I stay in peaceful! :biggrin.gif:
Minecraft can be scarier than most of those zombie games on the internet, well, most of them.
If I got a buddy behind me on the otherhand, well that's another story. CREEPER KILLING! :biggrin.gif:
I find minecraft very Immersive, because whenever I play it, I feel like I'm right there, mining, chopping wood, running from that creeper while also trying to get my expensive items out of that protected chest in that area where I made it impossible to reach...as for it being scary, the music, the sounds, the loneliness of it. I always feel like when I'm walking around like someone's watching me, or randomly I'll run into a abandoned civilization and wonder where they all went. Think about it this way, you wake up on a beach (because I always start on a beach for some reason...) and you don't remember anything, you look around and it's a quiet 'peaceful' island. But in a way, it has a quiet, lonely, creepy feeling, and you feel like you're being watched within those trees, or those mountains, or the water. How minecraft is scary to me is that it makes me feel lonely, and at risk. Especially when you get lots of and then a creeper just purposely kills you and you have to try and get all of those diamonds back.
l guess deep down everyones true fear is being alone.

Literally just found some, what does it do??
It's nice that you used the word "literally" because if you hadn't done that, I would have thought that you figuratively found some. Thank you for making that clear.
I heard that the reason you get so scared while playng minecraft is the blocks, that have drawings that look like faces, so you constantly have the feeling of being watched.
Speaking of which, I have always seen these ore blocks look like someone is smirking with a wry smile.
