This is a one use trap, useful to decide who enters and who doesn't into your base. It's a pretty rustic version and I build it just to show how it works.
From outside, you can see the wood dummy, two buttons, right for water, left for lava
Water and Lava reservoirs
Clicked water button, can be perfected to flood the room.
Clicked lava button, can be perfected so there's no block without lava.
EDIT:
Here's a tutorial in making the reservoirs, the rest is pretty simple.
My guess is that this works because when the redstone wire is activated it causes all of the adjacent tiles to "update" and react properly to their environment.
I wonder if activating redstone wire on magicly suspended sand/gravel would trigger it to collapse. That is if you can even place without triggering a collapse.
Since that's hard to find though, I'll have to just experiment with water.

Interesting hadn't heard of the exploit before, gotta try it out.
By the way, I like your music choice, :smile.gif: Portal is amazing.
Just feel it was perfect, specially since the trap can be changed and make both buttons be inside, making one of them lock the door and throw the lava at the intruder.
I've always thought of a TNT trap, since TNT reacts well with Redstone. Make a TNT and Sand trap, so that when it explodes, all the sand beneath you collapses.
Oh another cool idea might be to have torches beneath some cobblestone, and above the cobblestone, put gravel. Under all that is lava. Then, you blow up the TNT destroying the cobble, which causes the gravel to fall onto the torches, getting destroyed. Whoever is standing on top there then falls into lava. You can activate the redstone with a stone pressure plate, so only if a player steps on it, KABOOM!
That wouldn-t work, the torches would be blow off by the tnt making the gravel cover the lava , unless deep enough, also it would be really hard to build it again, I tested the one i made and it only needs to makes water come down and then destroy the cobblestone.
I sincerely hope notch adds either 'invisible blocks' (which disappear when activated with redstone, letting things fall or flow through it) or floodgates that allow this in the future as a feature in stead of an exploit. Or simply neglects to fix this exploit :biggrin.gif:

I do like the idea of a flooding room though, would be pretty awesome for siege night, getting overrun hit the 'reset' button!
I've been wondering if it's possible so I could build locks for my canal system.

Then you put a redwire pointing to the water spring it will naturally flood the 3 empty spaces.

Once you dig those three block water wont flood them till the wire recieves some current.

This is bloody brilliant! I must say, this is one of the best traps i have seen in minecraft.
Thanks.

I now will have a room in my base just for this awesome little trap....
Agreed!

I must know.
