My mobs do burn in the amount of water that I have at my grate. I believe that they DO burn. If not, just add a row of lava under your water at your grate. This will kill more and spare you the resources that would get eaten up. Edit: With todays 'bugfixes' I'm barely getting anything out of the farm anymore :|. I'll try to innovate it then be back to you.
*facepalm*
Yeah, I've been waiting for about half an hour for something. Nothing is showing up. I'm gonna let it idle all night... if nothing shows up, I shall be extremely sadface.
I made a video and I am now uploading it to Youtube. It does have commentary on it so hopefully it is easy to understand, and there is a suprise at the end.
EDIT: Youtube says ~77 Minutes left, so it'll be a while. S: Once it's done I'll link to it here. Keep in mind this is my first video, so it's also a trial thing for me.
EDIT2: Youtube says it is currently processing the video now, but here is a link:
EDIT3: Quality is horrible, going to look into ways to make it better. Stupid youtube. >_>;
Same, I haven't really had much luck with anything yet. Then again, the items are just going to disappear if you aren't checking the drop off point regularly, so that is an obvious issue. The mobs not spawning isn't really an issue with the contraption, but rather with how the mob spawns are now.
No luck with getting the video quality any better, but here is a link to the video in case anyone is interested.
I'm going to re-record it during the day to see if that will make it so you can actually see what I'm doing in the video. >_>;
Even after these discouraging posts, I wanted to make my own mob farm. It was an interesting task, yet I am unsure how the monster spawn rules work now. If it works? I don't know.
Here's the collecting area. Very simple design, and it should do it's job fairly well. It's easy to kill the un-undead with a couple of sword swings. And materials get transported to the other side of the grate.
I have organized my monster.. coups? into four rooms; two on each side of the stream. Stream starts at two spring blocks on either side of a divider at the end. Hopefully they work.
It seems like it would be a lot easier to collect monsters by just making a giant pit that lets them fall into the area, then let the water bring the items to you like it normally would. Having a monster spawning area is just too unpredictable and doesn't seem to yield any results atm.

it happens to the best of us
I am posting because I want to be in a memorable thread. Benzite is probably the craftiest of the mines imo.
edit: btw OP, could you post some pics of that system but brighter?
