I'm going for a slightly more realistic approach, so we'll see what goes down. I didn't know you could pillar fences, but it sounds like a great idea for porches.

Tomorrow is my last day of building, today I will be finishing up the mountain top rooms and the courtyard. Tomorrow will be for adding final touches then I will release my pics and do a walkthrough over the weekend.
Without giving too much away I will be going for a cliffside resort with a mountain side view of the ocean and a resort inside the mountain :smile.gif:
Day 1 - The beginning:
Day 2 - Excavation Begins:
Day 3 - Starting on the rooms and making a lighthouse:
Day 4 - More rooms!:
Outside the Room
The Kitchen
Beds
Bookshelf and Fire Place
Private Terrace
Day 5 - More rooms and a Boardwalk:
Made another set of rooms today on the other side of the mountain looking over the forest. I also made a boardwalk accessible from the rooms that takes you through the trees.
Day 8sih
I have been working on the beach, paths, more rooms, lighting and other small things over the weekend so here are some pics of those things. I will have more later.
Valley spawns are incredible and breath-taking, nice find on that.
Icey bay looks pretty cool too, that would make for a cool utopia.
To be honest, that light house looks so good it has the appearance of being created in creative mode,
nice job on that, its so big you can see it from space.. err.. cartographer. :biggrin.gif:

jarradw you world looks great! looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Thanks, went cave diving and found a huge system under my mountain I had in the pics, already got 2 stacks of Iron and more coal than I need for a lifetime. This should be fun.

Why not? I've been lurking around this board for about a month and a half, I was going to register eventually to post a UI makeover I've been tinkering with, but this sounds fun. I'm in.
World generated, here's my starting map:
View from the ground at the islands the spawn is on:
I took a look around, and spotted a pretty nifty mountain range off in the distance. I was sorely tempted to build there instead, but I decided I was going to construct my empire on the islands instead.
I went exploring on the mainland anyway in search of coal, and I sure scored in that regard. This map has a ludicrous amount of caves popping out onto the mainland, after a couple spelunking sessions I'm sitting on 2 and a half stacks of iron, piles of coal, and found some very shallow lava. My first priority was setting up a cobblestone generator on my islands, so I quickly smelted some metal and bucketed the lava I found.
Back on my islands, my temporary cobble generator was quickly set up.
I decided to begin with the town hall, following one of my favorite building styles. I decided I was going to follow a few rules for myself when constructing my town. First I would leave as much of the land pristine, only flattening off hills for foundations and such. Second, I would keep the architecture style consistent. An hour or so later I had the walls and basic shape of my town hall constructed.
I like this building style, I tend to use it frequently. But man, does it require a lot of cobblestone...Cobble walls, stone floors and cielings, and halfblocks for borders and bottoms of windows. I tend to double-layer the roofs of large buildings when I do this style, build a grass-growing ramp, then plant some trees on the roof. It doesn't look like much when under construction, but after landscaping it ends up pretty snazzy.
I decided I would build my lighthouse as well, so up that went. Unfortunately I had only encountered the one shallow lava fountain, so I went on a mega spelunk, eventually ending up at the lava depth. These caves on this map are ludicrously big...So with a couple asbestos buckets in hand, I trekked back to my island and put the last touch on my lighthouse.
A good start that I can be satisfied with. I'll leave off for now with a shot of the interior of the town hall. Bare, I need to decide what to decorate with. But for now I'm just focused on getting the basic buildings up, details and tweaks later.
---
Day 2 & 3
On day 2 I began construction of a bridge over to my cobblestone generator island. Nothing on it yet, but I plan for it to be one of the "housing" islands.
Once the bridge was complete, I began work on a storehouse. I didn't get around to finishing the interior until...
Day 3, I built a seperate building to house the towns furnaces. I also began work dropping the water level of a section of the lagoon.
About halfway through building the...Lowered water area thing, I realized "What in the bloody hell am I doing, this looks completely pointless and trashy." And it really does. I dub it Lake Halfass, I shelve the issue of figuring out what the hell to do with a terrible dammed off region for another day.
On the upside, the interior of the furnace building and stockhouse are complete.
A quick pillar trip up to have a look at the overall progress. Oh look, my trees are growing in, that helps quite a bit.
------------------
Day 4
I had an idea about fixing Lake Halfass, I expanded the lowered bit around my forge building, restored the water level around the outside of it. It looks interesting at the least. I also tore down the temporary cobblestone generator and installed a more effecient permanent generator on the lower floor of the forge building, now dubbed The Manufactory.
I also began work on the first two houses for the town. I'm still not sure on my plan for the houses, but I've never been one for plans. I imagine I'll end up making around 10 that are "small" 1-room houses, and the rest will be larger.
My island had a large "divot" in the center, right behind my storehouse. I decided I would fill the divot up and turn it into an above sea level lake right in the center of my main island. I figured it would look nice, as sort of a central park type area, as well as better satisfying the requirement for a lake. It was my first attempt creating a proper lake from scratch, and it was a pain. But it did turn out quite nice, especially after I installed a dam/bridge on one end that drains into the ocean. Note the pig on the roof of the storehouse...I'm going through sticks like a madman otherwise I'd put together a bow and get him off of there, damn trespasser...
Not quite satisfied with the lake, I decided to add a few lights under the bottom. This was a bit tricky to get right, and I'm sure I did it in a completely boneheaded manner, but it ended up working. I'm not quite completely happy with the result, but I don't want to go all the way and completely glass in the bottom of the lake...
The rest of the time was spent finishing up the first two houses, adding walls and landscaping, and trying to begin work on a series of roads and paths between all the buildings. So at the end of day 4 the town is beginning to look like something proper.
And since I haven't run it through Cartographer since my initial generation, here's what it looks like so far.
Blah! I don't like my area anymore. Fortunately I haven't really started much of anything. I've decided that building a lake (or raising the water level of a lake) is ridiculously hard. So, I'm going to start a new map, and go from there. Wish me luck! :biggrin.gif:

So guys Ive been lurking around these forums for awhile now and decided that its about time that i actually contribute and I decided to do so with this thread.
This is what I saw a few blocks away from where I spawned and I decided that this is where I would build my Utopia.
This is a closer up view of the two caves you can see in the first picture. They already supplied me with coal and I am pretty sure that they both converge at some point. There are also caves all over behind the little ridge that I will be exploring to get my supplies.
Ok, I finally generated a world that gave me some ideas.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Drainage System" especially because you say "not toilets". Could this be a funnel to a incineration pit or something?
Cartograph: (Updated 9-26)
Excavated hole which will become my lake:
Cave in the mountain which will serve as the city hall/temple.
Update 9-25 1 AM
Giant hole is now a hot spring.
A look at it from the (now) underwater mine.
Tomorrow: River and start on houses.
Update 9-26 2PM
Finished the Canal/river to the ocean. Just need to add some dam type structures to the inside of it. I want to raise the lake by one more block but it took me hours to get it where it is now and I got other things (like houses) to work on. Also made a water well in what will become the town center.
Hi everybody! It's good to see such a good response to the comp. I need to add everyone to the first post ASAP!
There will be 5 judges, I'll just pick the first 5 to ask, that makes it more simple.
And for my map: Disaster. AGAIN. I saved the seed for the map the first time, so I started to rebuild. Then, my laptop crashed again, and this time I didn't have the seed, so I raged like hell. Well, just spawning worlds now to find a good one.
EDIT: NO MORE SPOTS FOR UTOPIAS OR JUDGES! FOR THE LOVE OF QUEZACOATL!

Looks good everyone; I especially like the scottish/british castle there. My anglo blood tingled with joy when I saw it.
By the by, which texture pack is that? I like those windows much better than the default ones.
