I've always had trouble picking what to build the walls of my house of. It seems like whenever I decide to use a block my houses always seem bland. In your guys' opinions, what block looks the least bland and what are good way to make the walls (outside) look less bland.

Personally I like to have a border around my walls, like.. logs on the outside and planks in the center.
That or you build your house inside a mountain like I did with my most recent save, also, if your walls keep looking bland to you, try downloading different texture packs, look at the images they provide in the forums and pick one :3

Depending on what the try of your house is you could try:
Smooth stone on the bottom, brick for the rest.
Planks with logs at the bottom.
Chequered pattern with either logs and planks or cobblestone and smooth stone.
Basically don't use only one block. The more the merryier :tongue.gif:
im making an estate at the top of a mountain. atm I use smooth stone for walls. Planks for floors.

I would then say you have any combination of planks and logs for the Walls. However if you want to keep the estate look maybe a skirting of cobblestone or any pattern with them.
can you use the smilies to show how the patern would work? because making paterns with cobble stone/smooth stone always looks like crap to me :/

I build my buildings out of smooth stone, with the corners and a line of cobble in the center of each wall.
If the buildings big enough, I put sand or log 2x2 patches in symmetrical places.

Wool. That is all.
Or sand.
I currently only have one structure on my world save and it's not even done it's like a 20x30x50 smooth stone construct with half of it in the side of a mountain - if that makes sense. The floors are going to be either more smooth stone, cobblestone or dirt probably.

The foyer of my most recent house is floored with checkerboard fine stone and sand. 3 of the walls are gravel and the front wall is glass on a diagonal. My front yard is all sand with a cactus perimeter, a small 4x5ish infinite water pond surrounded in reeds. From the foyer I had a set of stairs (3 tall) which leads down to a door into the rest of my base. The stairs and all walls of this path continue the stone/sand checkerboarding. The next room houses my furnaces and leads to the lower sections of my base. it has stone walls and a floor pattern made using only chests and crafting boxes. There is also a 2x1 glass feature in the wall which shows lava. The cobblestone stairs to bedrock have a glass panel embedded in one side with a lava flow contained within. The is the only light source for my stairs. At the bottom of the stairs the lava falls through a and piles in the ground below which can be seen as a running lava river through a small section of glass flooring at the base of the stairs. That's mostly it for decor, but i would also like to mention my 2 'fish tanks' which are glass panels in the walls with baby slimes trapped inside.
So when doing a walkthrough from outside to the bottom you go from sand to sand/stone checkering to pure stone with lava features to cobble stairs with a big lava lighting system to my dungeons. It has a nice transition I think.
Edit; just watch out for cactus dodging ninja creepers. I had one today. Took a long time to rebuild the checker boarding due to the sand...

Wool is good for walls.
Just make sure none of it catches on fire.
