I seemed to get really lucky yesterday when looking for dungeons(for the gold records), I used a world I had created earlier but wasnt attached to, and gave myself diamond tools etc with invedit, then I proceeded to search for dungeons......in my search, I swear I uncovered more then 15 diamonds.
I have never found that many in such a short time before, and I just happend to do it in a world that was useless finding diamond in(I didn't even mine the diamond, I just dug around it to see how big the veins were)
The trick is to not search for diamonds. I was looking for red dust and I found my only diamonds (5 of them) and have locked them up in a safe, since it took me several dozens of play hours to find them. :V
Though, caverns are easy places to find minerals, since minerals are easier to find in them.
I think diamond tools should be indestructible, so they are actually used. I find it's so rare I make a sword out of it, and stockpile the rest... for more swords. A diamond pickaxe just gets burnt up too easily to be worth the effort!
That kind of defeats the point of Survival if they're indestructible. I agree they may need some tweaking, especially if other materials are added, but nothing should be indestructible.
True, maybe a better solution would be to make items repairable.

Look away, now look back. THE GHAST IS NOW DIAMONDS.
Anything is possible when you smell like a man and your game is minecraft.
Like people said, you should dig up from the adminium layer of the map before strip mining, don't want it in your way. 192439 133413 393628 15284718 3236161735123426161735123426 1222362818 263618 33342613342614 3712373418342347?

Yes, the only diamonds I have ever found were in alpha, although I worked almost nonstop for a LONG time in indev and infdev. When I mine, I just do a single tunnel to the bottom of earth, found loads of iron this way and a 6 DIAMOND VEIN, which I now realise is a lot. shovel, pick, and sword in one lucky vein
I've been looking.... fell into a lava pit while mining redstone unwisely from under my feet. Couldn't get out and for whatever reason, I'd filled my bucket with water.
Except, my iron pick died so I only got a couple, but still!
W t!

I just did strip mining at the surface, and a ways down it revealed a cave, the most epic cave I've seen, which contained 17 diamonds.

Or is there no point cuz its usually a vein?
