Hello there. I am creating a 4x4 horizontal shaft, simply for the purpose of mining tons of cobblestone/coal/iron if I'm lucky. That being said, the most advanced material I can make picks from is stone. So, I ask you: what is the most efficient way to mine in this situation?
branch mine off the lower levels depending on what ores you're after specifically.

never mine below you.
its simple as that. mine layer per layer put torches on each wall whit 2 blocks in between in the corners, use ladders to get out, and make a hole to the top of the ground (if you shaft is underground) fill that up whit glass, so you can use sunlight to light you mine during daytime.
Sunlight doesn't do anything when your 100 blocks from your ladder, you're just wastin' glass.
If you're just going for cobblestone the best method would be like a 4x6 that goes at a slight decline. Going straight down like that will work but you'll hit bedrock quickly, and at 4x4 you're not being all that efficient either as you can't really make it any wider after you've descended. It'll take a while to get into iron territory, but for the first 9,000 hours you'll be raking in the cobble/coal.
Learn the difference between vertical and horizontal, people. I mean honestly.

I don't get it.

basically you want them 3 blocks apart, and to go up/down enough to be level with the top of bottom of yours, and then stagger 50%. you get 100% coverage for not much effort, and you can branch out a LONG ways, and cover lots of ores.

I Cartograph, dig straight down from the surface towards the ore, mine out the entire vein, climb back up, repeat.
This is synonymous with the real world method of finding dead bodies of murder victims. I use ground penetrating radar, dig straight down from the surface towards the body, brush all the dirt off the body and lift it out of the ground.

for those that didnt watch the video the drift mining strat is the one i found to be best by far

This should get almost 100% of the ore you come across with the minimal amount of mining You'll be able to see the middle block indirectly due to deposit size

Thats generally the most efficient when looking for ores, but since the op also wants cobblestone, strip mining is the most efficient. Just make a giant pit and dig it down. My personal biggest strip mine was 16x16, that should get you more than enough cobble and coal, while also getting you a decent amount of iron and possibly even diamonds, gold and redstone.

He dug in the earth ever deeper
Diamonds of his
Were lost, with a hiss
There is a man who now fears the creeper

Theoretically thats the best way to mine (assuming you dont want to die in lava digging straight down...)
BUT, spacing them out COULD be a little efficent for most materials, but it would very slightly decrease efficency for diamond. (as diamond seems to be in groups of 1 or 2 more often than other ore...)
Wtf? Do you not know what horizontal means?

Fighting ignorance and false information one post at a time.
For the record if I correct you it's not meant maliciously, but if you whine about it I AM laughing at you.

I don't know if you understand, but this IS a horizontal view. He's mining the white and leaving the gray. That's TWO levels of mining. That's a view from the side, not the top... at least, I think it is.

It can set monsters on fire if you lure them under the light, even if you're at bedrock level.
