Hello people. I recently started minecraft and I am enjoying it thoroughly, but I am having irritating lag issues. My pc is low spec and the large environment often makes my computer lag while exploring. Is there a way to limit the map size to one that still provides plenty of opportunities for bases, but is..say 3 minutes from one end to the other or something? because I can just walk and walk and walk and walk at the moment and I get very lost and lag in the wide open spaces why my pc is trying to generate the places I havent been to yet.
Don't go wandering into the distance. Pick your spot(preferably close to spawn) and begin. When I first introduced Minecraft to my friends I hosted a server and left for a couple hours to grab some dinner and hang out with some others. When I came back they had gotten lost trying to reach the edge of the world....
For all purposes the world goes on forever, limit yourself to save yourself.
You should only ever have a certain amount of chunks loaded at one time, so the overall map size shouldn't make much of a difference.
Go into options and change the view distance to something smaller (Far > Normal > Small > Tiny). I'd also change the key for toggling this setting (F) to something else further from the WASD keys.
Hrm, ok. Perhaps ill just make a giant wall and leave it at that :tongue.gif:. Other than in game settings, are there any proven ways to help speed up the game?
And what makes you think I have gambling problems wibigdog? :tongue.gif:
Yea the map size doesn't effect your game play but there are ways to speed up your game. The first thing you should do is go into your options and set your graphics from "fancy" to "fast". This changes a number of things that will get rid of a lot of lag. If that doesn't get rid of the lag then you can also change your render distance in the options or press F while in game. If your game is lagging when you have fast graphics on and tiny render distance then your computer just can't handle minecraft.
TL;DR
To get rid of lag
Options --> graphics = fast
if still laggy then
Options (or F in game) --> lower render distance

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Make a compass, don't get your ass lost.
The virtually endless size of worlds is one of the most fantastic things about MineCraft.
Jeez..not really a cherry lot are you. The point of the wall would be to stop me going to far.
I heard about minimaps..what are they and such?
Oh, and any idea how many chunks are loaded at once? Because I was just playing a game...I pressed f3 or what ever it is and it said chunks updating (or what ever it is): 27, 27, 25, 27, and so on...:tongue.gif:
A minimap is a program that reads your position in semi-real time. And then places that on a small map of the area you are in, then overlays that map on the screen.
Yes! that is what I am asking for :smile.gif: a mini (small) map. How do I/can I get one of these in alpha? And will it help at all? Like does it just ,make a version of your map but smaller? Or is it more complicated.
And marfig, the wall would just be easier for me and give me something to do and allow me to focus on a small area and make it awsome and also mean my pc only has to show me the wall, not the more complicated stuff behind it. Is a theory but what ever.

But that's part of what makes MineCraft adventurous.
It's not the game's responsibility to prevent your dumbass from getting lost :tongue.gif:
Personally, I think that figuring out how to keep track of yourself, and finding your way around, is part of what makes MineCraft so much fun, and so much different than other games.
I understand that, but my pc makes the game playable...but rather irritating when im constantly loading chunks. Im not saying any of you should do what I do Im only asking you, who have been playing longer than me, for any suggestions on how I can make the game more enjoyable for me. I wish I could explore, and once I get my new pc I will love it, but for now, i cant.

Ok, got it.
As for your chunk question, this is how the game behaves:
1.
When you first spawn after creating a new world, only chunks around you get created and stored on disk. The exact number, I don't know.
2.
A chunk is a 16x16x128 area of the map.
3.
As you start moving into unexplored areas, new chunks get created and stored on disk. If the chunk was already stored, it gets loaded
4.
As you get away from already known chunks, these get unloaded.
5.
I don't known how many chunks are loaded at any time. But this number is not related to your map size. You could conceivabley have explored all the world and stored it in your disk, but still while you move about only a small number of chunks is loaded at all times (the ones you can see and a few beyond that).
6.
The exact wording with the F3 key is "chunk updated". It's not clear to me what that may mean. The number may be number of chunks updated and Notch didn't worded it "chunks" maybe because he missed it or there's a horizontal character space limitation in the text he decided to place there, or that's just the chunk code number that just got updated. In any case you can see those numbers ranging from 0 to just a little over 110, I believe. Maybe more. I didn't test it any further. But again that data is irrelevant to you, as the number of loaded chunks remains pretty much constant in your travels, maybe the max number you see there.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.
ok a few things
there is a limit to the map and it will circle around till you get back to where you started
thing of this, one block in minecaft is 1x1x1 metres so onw edge is one meter notch has said that the world of minecraft is eight time the size of EARTH so it would take weeks in real life to travel the whole distance walking in real life imagine that 8 TIMES
if you do acomplish i can imagine that your world file size would be well over a gig
Any help much appreciated.
Thank you!
