Hey guys, here is my tutorial on how to make a redstone repeater. I know this is very basic knowledge to a lot of us, but I remember when I was a newer player and having no idea how to do this, and it constantly causing me to not be able to do some things I wanted.
Anyways, hope this helps some newer players, and thanks for watching!
Yeah take a look at luke's tutorials for some more advanced techniques. The reason you place a torch on the side is redstone torches act like a No Gate, Which, to be quite honest, I'm not 100% sure what that means in circuitry terms, but to me it means when one side of the redstone is off, with the no gate their, the other is turned on, hence a repeater.

The reason you place the redstone torch on the top or side of a block is to make it accept input.
The basic logic gate is a NOT gate, a repeater is made be placing 2 NOT gates together. Check out for a description on how to configure these (they are more about booster carts but part 2 has an excellent explanation of redstone repeaters and inverters).
1 NOT gate = Inverter
2 NOT gates = Repeater
You were spot on with your description of a NOT gate. Logic has 2 states, they can be ON/OFF, TRUE/FALSE, 1/0, YES/NO or any combination of 2 different values, it could be A/B.
A NOT gate simply outputs the opposite state to it's input, when the input is one state the output will be the other state, ie. it's saying the input is NOT what I am outputting, and because it's a choice of 2 values (or a Boolean), if it's not one it must be the other.
There are a lot of other useful things that can be done with logic gates, and they are all built using multiple NOT gates.
edit: I hadn't watched your video before posting this.
Thanks for the clarification, I don't know to much behind all of the gates, I just know how to make them and what I can use them for. That was really helpful to me, and I'm sure everyone else reading this :smile.gif:
For the guy a few posts up, a Redstone repeater is basically a thing (To simply the names we will call it this haha) that makes it so you can have over 15 redstone wire activated at one time, by turning on one thing (The game stops you at 15 if you do not add a repeater.

Why do you place the redstone torches on the side of a block rather than just on the ground?
I need the basics explained to me like I belong in assisted living.
