The above picture is a medium size artificial lake I created from the leftovers of a former sand deposit. It's 2 deep on most blocks, with some areas 3 or 4 blocks deep.
I had lots of trouble getting the water to behave as I was filling the basin. I couldn't get the "still waters" look I was aiming for and this is the first time I was forced to use a map editor to accomplish something.
Have any one of you ever had the need to do something similar? Can you give me some pointers as to how fill such large and deep areas of water? All works well when you get a 1 or 2 deep water basin of small proportions. But once you get 3 blocks deep, I found it impossible to control it.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.
Make a checkerboard of dirt and water at the top of where you want the water to be (only have empty space below it). Break the dirt. BINGO, instant lake.

'Ive tried the opposite. Filling in a giant area of water with sand. Took 4 invedit'ed diamond picks and 2 hours of work, but it vastly expanded my flat beach. Was worth it.

Also;
I request photographic evidence or I'll be forced to state that what you claim to have occurred, did not, in fact, transpire at all.

Very interesting! I'll have to keep that in mind for next time (there's another lake I wish to build not far off). Thanks a lot for that!
Just to clarify, the checkboard pattern should be placed 1 block above what will be the waterline, correct?

No, At the waterline, place the dirt then place water between the dirt.

Filling areas is a pain in the ass. Notch traded just about every advantage of water to give us waterfalls and to make it slightly harder to grief. :tongue.gif:

You heard that, green and red.
