Is armor useful? Because I never make armor , other than the full set of gold ^.^ I like to look flashy, off topic , but I never found armor useful , if you are going to take damage then you take damage as your armor looks durability.
I made leather armor a couple times. It didn't seem to do anything and was broken really quick, so I didn't make it anymore. Too much effort getting the material for it to do so little and last such a short time.
Armor is extremely useful, gold however... is not. Gold is as strong as wood, and doesn't make good armor. leather is decent, steel is well better, diamond is the best.

That diamond is so... arrousing, with those supple veins of gold....
Steel armor makes a ridiculous difference. What I've seen on Normal difficulty is you take only about 1/2 heart from a skelly arrow rather than the 2 hearts unarmored, and in my experience you can survive a hug (only one) if you were at full health. The steel armor also lasts quite a long while unless you get into Mortal Kombat mode and attack everything.
Diamond armor isn't worth the enormous cost, because it only lasts about twice as long as steel.

Thank you , haha I am not contemplating on making a armor set with my ass ton of iron bars ( 3 stacks O.o )
Armor makes a world of a difference - never go cave splunking without it! I've been double kaboomed by two creepers before, epic enough to shoot me up four levels onto a platform, and lived because of my iron armor. I would recomend leather armor though if you don't have enough iron - stuff breaks quick though.
I agree though that diamond armor just isn't a good investment.
My favourite game is building a cobblestone bridge in a gorge and playing normal at night fighting off mobs. it's very fun. Diamond sword, bow, arrows and STEEL ARMOUR. I'd never survive the night without steel armour.

While Shaggy and Scooby were busy being douches and Thelma was busy failing at life, Daphne and Fred were clearly getting it on. Let's be real.

diamond armour seems like kind of a waste to me, But iron armour is extremely helpful and easy to make. Unless you play on peaceful, obviously, in which case using armour would just be stupid.
I always wear iron armor. Saves on putting food in inventory slots. And since nothing else can go into the armor slots anyway, why not? I look at it as though I'm essentially putting my supply of food there instead, since armor is essentially automatic health replacement in that respect, taking most of the damage so actual health doesn't have to.
I'd even wear leather armor, except I had enough iron to make that kind of armor before I had enough leather to bother. Snow worlds are bummers when it comes to cow spawning, at least mine has been.
I haven't really found enough Iron to justify making armor out of it. I just make a farm and have tons of food on me, but it does get me killed occasionally trying to get food out of my inventory .

Leather armor in top repair will save you from creeper 1HKO's. Leather is cheap and plentiful, which makes it perfect for overland excursions -- just re-craft your armor every time it falls below 50% durability, and you're good to go.
Steel armor is awesome for deep cave spelunking, or taking on several vicious mobs at once. It's a lot more durable than leather, but eventually does wear out. Losing a brand new full set of steel armor due to a massive cave-in does hurt, however (though not as much as diamond and gold, I'd imagine!)
Someday I want to craft a set of gold armor so I can strut around town acting like the spoiled prat I am.
