I always carry a stack of gravel with me. It's really handy in caves as a weapon: just drop two-three on a mob's head and watch it suffocate to death. :biggrin.gif: I also like to use gravel to build paths between my important structures/cave entrances above ground.
I often use dirt as the basic "tool block" - I use it for building quick bridges and staircases, displacing water and lava, building pillars, and so on. Basically anything I need to build where the material doesn't matter.
As for cobblestone, that's the main material I personally use for buildings. You'll also want to save several for crafting stone tools (the most economic of the tool materials) and things like furnaces.

People are warned to shred the earth to get away from you before you have lost your marbles.
I use dirt to fill in gaps when building, Your not going to see it anyway so might as well fill it in to help build.
But at times like leaving unreachable air pockets in my structures.
I hope that mobs will spawn in it and I'll be able to hear the moans.

Several solutions posted here, all valid. I myself only dispose of the single two most useless resources in MineCraft history, gravel and flint (I don't use a flint&steel all too much, so I don't need epic amounts of flint)

Also, gravel can be used to fill up that wrong-dug cave you actually didn't want.
Dirt is nice for terraforming. I built me a huge tree garden 15 blocks above sealevel.
You can dump whole stax of items easily: stand next to lava, open your inventory, pick up unwanted stack (don't place anywhere), close inventory and watch items burn away.
I found this out by having a bucket of water in hand when closing a chest and flooding my base :\
flint (I don't use a flint&steel all too much, so I don't need epic amounts of flint)
...You don't use it for arrows?
The only thing I ever have a surplus of is dirt. I don't expect to ever make a castle out of dirt. However, I do use dirt for a lot of things - scaffolding, temporary barricades, etc. Just, most of the things I use it for are temporary, meaning I eventually get the dirt back...
Leave a hole in front of where the water goes down and simply throw your unwated items down in the well never to be seen again. ^^
I read all the posts, and most of them were what I was looking for. I really like the idea of a well, and might build some in an area I found earlier. For a storage room of chests, I can make that happen. I don't think I'll be making a lava pit anytime soon because I have not yet found any. With extra stone (I always keep a bunch for tools) I'll probably go Aztec or whatever and build a temple. I'll save dirt for bridges because I live in a mountainous area. Lastly, gravel, I will just throw down in a well and if I need it I'll go get it.
I started playing Survival Mode a couple days ago and it's pretty fun. My world is in the winter but it's not that bad. What I've done is just build a small house in a small mountain and I started digging mines below. After a bit of work I've noticed my inventory is cluttered with gravel, dirt, and stone. I already have the large chest built and even with that I don't have enough room. What is a solution to too many blocks from mining?
A lot of chests, you might want that stuff one day.
If you already have 162 stacks of something, throw it in lava, or dig a hole in the side of your mine tunnel and toss them in.
It saves on cobblestone and makes a more realistic wall. Since medieval wall often had dirt, mortar, and gravel to fill the in between portions of large walls. Even the Great Wall had and interior of dirt and gravel.
everytime i run out of room in my chest while mining i make another large box. each space in between i make myself another furnace. especially if youre down by plentiful lava or coal....having multiple furnances and boxes with a workbench on hand is the way to go.
if you have a ton of cobblestone you can also smelt all that rock while youre mining to save time and have a nice few boxes of smooth stone
I'm so glad I'm not the only hoarder here... large chests are so cheap why not build a storage room underground and expand it as you fill it?
I have an incinerator but I only use it for worn stone tools, it's mostly just for fun.

This is what I would suggest, you are not limited on storage space in anyway. Getting wood for chest is very easy as its a renewable resource.
Keep saving the stone, you may wont it someday.
