If a compass points at your spawn, It wont do much good for people who build their base away from a spawn. All of my bases are very far from the spawn point, because I search for Good locations for my base. If there was a Magnetic block you could craft, such as...
= Redstone
Then Compasses would be useful to point you to the EXACT location of your Base, which, logically, is where you would put your Magnetic Block.
Therefore, having a Magnetic block would make the Compass beneficial for People who build near their spawn and people who dont.
1- The compass is not designed as a perfect pointer to where you want to go. It is a compass, it points you in a specific direction for easier navigation.
2- Multiplayer. How would the game know which magnetic block to point to?
That's like saying "my irl compass should point only to my house".
So pretend your spawn is north and figure it out based on that. It's not going to be a perfect device to get you anywhere, it's a tool to aid in navigation. It's fine the way it is imo.
COMPASSES R REAL COOL N ALL BRO REAL STYLISH U KNO WHAT IM SAYIN, BUT MY HOUSE IS NOWHERE NEAR THE NORTH POLE KNOW WHAT IM SAYIN, SO THEY DONT DO NOTHIN FOR ME BRO
Personally, I've yet to use a compass, BUT, I think they're very useful. For example, imagine this happened:
You're way out into an SMP map, away from everyone. Your friend wants you to come see his base, so you ask what direction it is in. He says "North of the Spawn". The simplest way to get to his base would to navigate to the spawn, by the use of a compass, then FOLLOW THE CLOUDS. People often forget that the most accepted navigation tool until now was the clouds. Clouds move North, also.
If I ever find an apple, I'm going to go away from my computer and make a cup of coffee. Then I'll come back and drink it while consuming digital apple, imagining the taste. I bet Minecraft apples taste like rainbows and fairy tales.

The only reason Xenn has not been warned is that he is absolutely right.
This. A compass is useful no matter where you are, though you may have to use them differently. In fact, compasses IRL would be far more useful if the magnetic north pole was one tiny little spot.
It should be that only one magnetic mark stone exist, if you craft another , the first dissapears.
A bit troublesome for multi-player, though, isn't it? I kind'a like the idea someone mentioned that a compass could point to the spot where it was created. It has magic redstone in it, after all.
Though personally, I'm happy with it the way it is.
Compass are useful to certain people. Ladders are useful to curtain people. Staircases are useful to curtain people. NOT EVERYONE HAS A USE FOR EVERYTHiNG. Some hate redstone, some hate doors, some even hate water. Who cares, this game doesn't have every element tailored to one person, Only many elements to many people.

You can go ahead and move at the speed of light, But i will move at the speed of darkness.

Amirite?
but yeah you are right this would be hell of alot better than the compass we have now
You cant take the arrow around with you when you explore. Hur Dur.
It would point towards the block that you made.

Of course, it's a makeshift solution. And you should anyway, what if you die? Will you be lost?
I got a defaut mini defence already at my spawn ( Epic castle of torches with some stuff)
But its worthless to get to my base's....
1) Tree house....
2) Underground cavarn
3) Sky fort (EPICZ?)
4) Water base
it didn't remove anything, and its purpose for when you want to go explore really really far off...
but you can use the compass to navigate to spawn then follow the arrow
Change spawn point to near your house
????????????????
PROFIT!!!!
When I go sailing, I go easily find my way back to my homeland, even if it is far away from my base.
On my Skyworld save, I found a chest full of apples and one golden apple but I haven't seen them anywhere else.
