after a few hours, i found 24 , 78 redstone dust, 65 ,a couple dozen and close to a hundred i ran out of torches while exploring and a herd of mobs killed me from behind, plus my mines have about 5 natural caves connected so i could NEVER find my way back.
now i know to bring more than 3 stacks of while exploring...

I can destroy a mountain with a feather. What's so wrong about that?
Spending hours building a waterfront base, complete with window overlooking the ocean and beach. I even spent some time building a harbor to keep my boat in. I dug out several levels of basements for farms, storage, art, etc.
Then one day I opened the front door in the morning, only to have a creeper jump off the roof and detonate, killing me. I ran back only to find the entire structure flooded.
Now I put doors on each floor, and don't stand around near the walls until I know the coast is clear.
I constructed a roof over a rather large building before realizing that the roof I built was 1 block lower than it needed to be. Had to tear it down and redo the whole thing.
Another time, I was building my very first underground farm. I didn't realize I could create streams of water by using buckets, so I dug a 100~ block underground trench from the ocean to my farm.
Another time, I was building a rather large bridge. I needed to get back down to the ground to resupply. I looked down below at the water and thought "I can save time by jumping off, and the water will break my fall". Problem is, I hadn't yet realized that the surface of water on snowy maps is frozen over. I went splat.
Also, the same bridge-ice-splat incident was my very first death, and I didn't realize I could run back out and collect the items I lost. I ended up losing quite a bit of stuff despite the fact that my death occurred about 30 seconds away from my spawn point.
So I was making shafts using TNT (cheated, but I don't get any ores out of it so there!) to hollow out a mountain. To avoid destroying the landscape I would dig a two block wide hole into the ground then pillar back up and drop the TNT into the hole. At one point, wanting to see the explosion I crept right up to the edge just after dropping a block of TNT.... and I fell into the shaft... trapped with no where to run or hide.
Luckily I had a rail tracks leading right up to the mountain from my spawn location so I got back with seconds to spare to save my diamond pick/shovel, steel sword, buckets of lava/water, a full stack of torches/coal and some wool.
Pretty early in the game, I decided to adventure outside in the dark. I was equipped with my trusty stone sword and bow, so I though I could probably take a mob if I ran into one. Well, I didn't run into one, but one ran into me, a creeper. I also failed to build any kind of shelter to my spawn point, so there I suddenly was, out in the open, completely defenseless with quite a bit of night to go. Luckily, there were no mobs close enough to see me, although all the time I was sitting there, I could see another creeper, zombies and skeletons bouncing around between me and my route back to all my stuff. When morning finally came, I was able to go around and get my things, but after that I've not wondered out in the dark much.
Another creeper related incident was when I was evening out an area so I could construct a building, I was shoveling some soil near this rather high wall. Apparently I had forgot to check out my surroundings properly, because the last thing I heard was some disturbing hissing, before I found out that a creeper had fallen on my head and I was back at my spawn point. I've not really wondered deep enough yet, to get any really good fails. :sad.gif:

I have a number of fails, but the funniest was a near miss.
I have a camp on a large island. The coast that I've explored so far is strung with torches. One day I decided to swim across the bay, off to the left, to look at an island. There on its beach were some very deep caves, which I decided to explore.
I get lost all too easily, and there were a lot of big caverns, so I got lost again. After a long, frustrating time I decided just to tunnel up and out, and see where I'd come out.
When I finally dug out, to my surprise I see cobblestone walls and torches. I had tunneled all the way back to my camp. The funny part is that I missed my lava incinerator by about 3 tiles!
I guess I should glass that in, so I can see it from below if need be.
Opened my chest right in the middle of my house... with a lava bucket equiped T____T
I was almost crying seeing my whole wooden house go ashes :sad.gif:
Hopefully I had a save backup.
I set up a snazzy minecart connected thing from my house to my mines. Well, I was climbing up the ramp to my cart above my house with a lava bucket equipped. I missed the cart and dumped the lava. I then actually clicked on my cart trying to scoop up the lava and went straight to my mine. I hopped out fast enough to not get too far and went back to my base. When I got back, almost my whole house was full of lava due to a creeper attack the night before, which I had planned on fixing. So I just decided to get a bucket of water and just solidify my house. I went in and mined around and actually found my chests and moved down to my underwater base. I was still quite sad.

This happened to me.
And the worst is, earlier that day I had done that holding a water bucket. You'd think I'd have learned. Well, the lava was a pretty efficient tutor.
That is all.
I died.
I see your lava and raise you peaceful.
