Am i the only one who hopes to be able to make a hotel/Shelter&Food building where people can pay to have a luxury room in somewhere beautiful in a server when SMP comes out?
I mean, many people might not want to spend the time to build their own shelter, and might want more company, so they could pay a block to a hotel owner and they'd be able to give them food and shelter for a while, and also slight protection, and if they don't have the resources to pay, they could just work there for a while, protecting and feeding the hotel visitors.
It would be great to have places where people can just live together, since it wouldn't be nice to be alone for most people.
I fathom this too, only perhaps with an entire city within a gated boundary wall. I'd tax people for their house ownership, and if they fail to pay their taxes over a long period of extensions, I cut off the electricity redstone control circuit to their house. If, on one of my inspection watches, I notice their electricity redstone control circuit still on despite my turning it off, I end their ass.
It would be a nice idea on RP servers. Maybe some advantages if you sleep in a comfortable place.
Obviously, with ALOT of people, you'd probably be guaranteed to be safe.
If a creeper walked into the building via pathfinders everyone would probably become alert

For me, i'd just make a control board that lets me shut doors manually, so if someone was reported of doing something bad in one room, the redstone will instantly close it's door [in hope that he's trapped inside, anyway], and the hotel guards will have a word with the person.

People gotta stop taking Real things and thinking they will automatically work in minecraft. Like Hotels, gold as currency, etc.
The only service i can imagine people would pay for, would be trading for iron, wood and diamonds, as well as "renting" a roomfull of fully coaled up furnaces.
And the whole fun in this game for most people is building stuff. Why would anyone want to pay you instead of doing that, which is fun for them?
I wasn't saying it will automatically work, and people are able to customise their hotel room as much as they want, until when they go, i'd clean it up.
Sounds like you're talking more about a commune in my opinion. I see it as the random single scavenger, traveling from chunk to chunk doing some foraging, mining, and lumbering. As night falls he'll need a place to stay, I personally wouldn't be content just sitting in a hole in the ground, so I'd look for a place to go ahead of time. This is where I think you idea would come in.
If Notch adds the ability to add maps, which I pray he will, you could advertise your location on the map. Over-nighters could pay a few gold (I support gold currency :biggrin.gif:) to stay, maybe a few more for food. Long-term residents could be directed to a small town, where basic amenities have already been set up. Have a mess hall, a trade house, sleeping quarters, etc. I even see these outposts/communes being supported by the local governments (You know there'll be governments.)
Anyways, I'm going to stop my self here. I may have gone way off from the original intention of this post, but i've gotta throw my ramblings somewhere. :biggrin.gif:
Edit: Wow, three posts in the time it took me to type mine :S

And you need the redstone for what? I don't ever use redstone
I'unno. But if there's an actual redstone affected light-source, be it block or lamp or something, then since I built pretty much all the houses, I string the redstone around the house for the lights, corresponding to a switch where you can turn it on/off. If, however, in my main castle/governors office/whatever, I turn the electricity to your house off at its source, the circuit would fail, as I'd have every circuit in the house work off an NAND circuit. :]
So if they break into their ceiling/wall/basement, and **** around with this for free electricity, I have them... "removed".

They won't work unless you enforce them. It's simple logic: You see I ask for gold, you give me gold laughingly, since you have so much of it, and it's "useless". Eventually you grow addicted to this simplicity. However, one day I offer something of higher quality than normal, and you need it. But you have no gold, since you spent it all already, and I'm not accepting anything else of yours. Whoops! You might take your 'business' elsewhere, but where would you find the bargain of such a silly, "useless" thing like gold?
Hotels, cities, etc. are the same. You see shelter in your travels, and you don't have to waste your materials, so you stay the night, find a healthy number of other people staying there, get chatting, have a good night, and then continue on your merry way. The Inn offers food and drink for a small fee (or, free, if the owner is childish), and can easily replenish you fully, even if you only stay there for 5 minutes. You simply go to a building for free healing, without having to waste the time or tools. Sure, you can build your own house -- and it's fully encouraged -- but where's the luxury of a free meal? You choose to do it alone, you stay alone, and you force your own labor and tool expenses. We... provide the luxury. We do not force you. If you say no, then that's perfectly fine -- our resources are available to the next person who asks for it.
Then what's the point of hotel?
That brings up quite a good question.
But, personally, i still think there's a reason to go to hotels, not only do you get security and food, but you get access to resources that are hard to get on your own.
More mobs would be needed - there simply won't be enough mobs for hunting for everyone to hunt them.

I hope you wont mind me entering, then sticking my room full of TNT (connected by redstone leading to outside the base) then running out, block the entrance with lava and set of the TNT.
Oops, almost forgot the part in between where I kill you and loot your gold.
I hope you don't mind me banning you from my server, and reloading a backup.
Moreover, if that weren't an option: ALL the residents of that same hotel would come together and KILL YOUR ASS.
I fathom this too, only perhaps with an entire city within a gated boundary wall. I'd tax people for their house ownership, and if they fail to pay their taxes over a long period of extensions, I cut off the electricity redstone control circuit to their house. You know, they could just place a torch. Of course it wouldn't be as cool, but seriously, taxes? Making a game that's very simple into something very complex really strips it of fun, for the most part. Of course it would be cool to be a landlord, but I don't see anyone wanting to pay for land.
The idea of a hotel is pretty cool. Giving people free food and shelter would work better, I think. Perhaps visitors could lend a hand if you needed it, or simply asking for a few ores from their travels.
considering I guess notch will make your chat only visible for people nearby you...
I'm pretty sure this was never confirmed by notch, and was only a user speculation for a while, and probably still is. Moreover, with programmable preference servers, we, the server owners, can specify how the chat system works - wither or not there's a range to speech, if walls impede it, or if it's global chat no matter what.
Also, considering you said you'd blow up YOUR ROOM, I'd assume the point of origin would be screaming retarded in how obvious it is, and by simple calculation known as addition and subtraction, people can deduce the room number you were staying in. And yes, anywhere between 2 and 17 people would know about the explosion, considering THEIR ROOM WOULD BE DAMAGED TOO. People would SEE YOU. They'd know who you are, walk in on you as you stockpile the TNT, and moreover, ask the hotel owner, "Hi, may we ask who was staying in room 207? He blew up his room and ****ed with our ****. We'd like to track and kill his ass."
So alright, I won't ban you. 2 to 17 people will instead kill you at every waking moment until you leave.
screw hotels. i would build homes for rent, iwth all the necessities, (furnace, crafting table, and a chest), blus a bed, a rooftop balocony, and a small backyard.

Give me an internet, or Chuck Norris will kill you!!!
I'll build some free houses with furnaces, crafting tables and beds inside. I'll also build a donation shack full of chests where people can give their extra cobblestone to people who need it. There's no need to pay for a hotel, really. The necessities of minecraftian life are very easy to get.
Hotels, currency, and all that real life stuff sounds like a good idea for a role-playing SMP match/server/map, and that only. Real Minecraftians build huts out of dirt when they need a place to stay.
An inn would help greatly if a simple, non-game-breaking heat/hunger system got implemented, so you don't have to "hard RP". I think RP is pretty boring, so why not make player/player interaction be an advantage instead of something you pretend to do? Lemme dig my post up from FP:
"A hunger system would be good, IMO. It would make keeping a farm or raising pigs useful, and when SMP comes around, farmers won't make wheat for nothing. The effect of not eating for a two days would be to walk slightly slower and a decreased max health. Three/four days, and you will perform actions such as mining or cutting wood slower, and finally at day five you will walk even slower and lose two hearts a day.
If seasons get implemented, i would like to see a temperature feature. Spending too much time in the summer sun (we're talking almost a whole day) decreases walk and work speed ever so slightly. Bathing in water or resting in the shade will restore you. This also counts for staying near large amounts of lava for extended amounts of time (yet much less than the sun), but somewhat stronger.
As for cold in the winter, making some items generate heat fields (this might be too processor-heavy), like torches, furnaces and lastly fires prevents you from suffering chillyness (slower walk speed), then lastly frostbite (losing hearts, approx. 8 a day if staying nowhere near heat-sources). Wearing special winter clothing under any armor, or leather armor would negate some of the cold.
I think these all combine to present players with fun scenarios like starvation due to bandits stealing food, a small group of intrepid explorers staving off a freezing snow-storm by lighting a fire in an old cabin and farmers getting rich off of the high demand of food.
Please, I'm tired and therefore make less sense than if i were completely sane, so bear with my ideas."
I think it would really give players another challenge that wouldn't kill them except from the most serious cases, and expand the spectrum of gameplay.

Supply.
And.
Demand.
I'll be shocked if this ends up working.
I was actually planning to make the hotel mostly underground, which will let me make snug rooms.
It will also make it much more peaceful.

Water. Water absorbs any tile damage TNT would deal.
