I overheard some people complaining about ladders, and I got thinking about some things I'd like to see with them.
Anyways, here's what I suggest: Currently Ladders need to have a block behind them to work. A ladder now would have to look something like this: (let's just pretend stick is ladder)
What I suggest is that you can place a ladder on top or beneath another ladder no matter what's behind. As long as one ladder piece out of the group is backed onto something the group is fine. for example you could just start with:
And then place ladders below the first one until you get:

[] [] [] [] The ladder is "leaning" against the top block so it remains a whole

Why? ladders could take up less space, they could be climbed both sides so could be used by 2 people and would generally look more stylish than a pillar in the middle of your room. I have no Idea how this would work code-wise and/or how much work this would be, or even how useful it'd be in the end. I just wanted to share this.
In the livestream chat with Notch a little while ago, he said he liked the idea of "ropes" which I'm guessing would serve a function similar to your diagram. Well, now that I think about it, he liked just about every idea that was thrown at him....
I actually like my ladders attached to log pylons, but I could see a harder-to-manufacture rope ladder, which can reach down, like, 15 blocks, and only requires a point up top.
i suggested a very, very, very, very long time ago rope blocks, you place it and it kind of trails downward, using up however many blocks it goes downward, holding space would've enabled you to climb it
also thought you could craft it from long, which now (with crafting added) seems do-able

Anyways, what do you think about ladders?
Good for adventuring or mines?
Also they should be able to be attatched to arrows to shoot ropes up into the cieling :tongue.gif:

Would be epic!
And the Zelda pack could have it's Hookshot.
Fund it.
How hard is it for people to get that?
Ropes
Winch
That way I can make an elevator system
Like how AWESOME would it be to have a push button,
and have an elevator drop down to take you up to an overhanging base?!
