So I've been working on a map for a while, and now I need a break... Here's the incomplete version. And by "incomplete" I mean something like nearly a dozen rooms of traps and puzzles. I've spent well upwards of 20, maybe 30 hours on this... Not too pleased with the depth and breadth of it, but it's still pretty nice. It should be about as long as the other adventure maps on average (some were short, some were long... so average :wink.gif:)
Completed the map, I somehow managed to end it right where I spawned originally, purely on coincidence.
Here's links to the full version. I also fixed the one major glitch, and just ignored the other since you'll never see it (one piece of ceiling was supposed to close behind you, but 2 seconds later you can't go back anyway.)
Also, feel free to hit any snow you find to collect snowballs. You don't need the snowballs, but sometimes people leave things in the snow...
My map is *mostly* fixed, the spawn should be good (copy map again if you die, you'll know why at the start of the dungeon). There's one or two 'bugs', but they're not things you'll notice playing, they're things I put in which the wiring got messed up for and don't activate... and playing through again some of the things didn't work as well as I hoped, and the bugs... well, bug... goes with that; something that should happen just simply doesn't, and is something most people wouldn't have seen anyway.
Anyway, I wanted a thread for adventure maps and discussion in general. I'm trying to make a map with a set of traps just sitting above ground, so I'll be trying to place that on top of a 200x200 sand grid; the idea is to have traps and mechanisms people can play with to see how they work, and also for others to add and demonstrate. I might add that to this post later if I have time.
Here's a list of some of the forum threads with Adventure maps to download and play:
Please discuss the individual maps in their respective threads.
Also, here's a flatgrass map with a 200x200 flat grass surface and unaltered infdev terrain below, in other words build up, but don't expect anything uniform down. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7XT4TFNQ
And since noone's posting, and more so because I'm impatient and bored... Here's a few tips for people who are completely new to mine craft mechanics that will help with contraption construction:
Water and lava will treat pressure plates as if there was a full block their; either stopping or going over top, as they would normally.
Water and lava will not pass through doors.
Water will destroy torches, red torches, and red stuff that it comes down onto, but it will detach and carry them if it moves into the block from the side.
Mine carts will trigger wooden pressure plates, but not stone pressure plates, even when a player is sitting in the cart.
Sand falling onto a torch will be destroyed. Sand on top of TNT, when both are falling, will *NOT* be destroyed by a torch. Remember this when trying to drop TNT into water. Any sand/gravel on top of TNT trap *will* destroy blocks, there is, to date, no effective workaround to this problem, and no effective way (bar using a map editor) to have sand that will fall when people walk on top of it other than with TNT below.
Still water and still lava (use InvEdit) will not activate until an adjacent block is changed; being placed, removed, or in the case of red stuff, being activated.
So, on to the discussion: What are some of the traps you've designed specifically for Adventure mode, and how do you like your maps?
Mine was originally meant to be partially deadly with lots of running from lava, but it turned into a bunch of cobbled-together little fun-rooms, some of which the real fun is in the mechanics behind the scenes (using water to drop torches onto an unseen pressure plate to open a door while TNT starts flowing to cut the water back off and show you lava where there was water a moment ago in some glass...), there's a few spots of the cieling coming down behind you, an early lava chase... Oh, and I think an instance of the ceiling coming down to save you. If you did it right, that is. Too bad you can't have required mine-cart rides where you can't get out until a a certain spot...
I also placed in some 'loot', gold, iron, food... I intend to use it for points later on, so you get rewarded for 'finding' the poorly hidden secrets (again, the ones at the end of the dungeon are much better hidden. Especially the one with the wooden sword). I let people use tools they pick up in my dungeon to do things... So far there's an axe and two pieces of flint, for destroying wood... and I was going to use cotton, but never got around to it.
I have yet to try Adventure maps, mostly because they were incredibly lame in the indev days and because I felt like waiting for the official mode. However, I like the concepts and wouldn't mind designing some of my own so I'm going to try out this one and the other ones linked in the thread. I'll post my opinions when I'm done.
edit:
Shakura, your adventure map seems like it might be cool, but I think you have the spawn set in the wrong place. I think it is set near the end instead of at the beginning. That said, the one part I can see, the excavation exit with the hidden tnt explosion is really cool and creates a great atmosphere.
Its just that its my first time ever making anything like that, so thats why its small ^^;
Though i DO plan on making another ;D
This time with more rooms and puzzles ;D

Fixed the post :biggrin.gif:
Looking forward to the new one. I'm trying to make a new one on the side of the one I have, just using a mapmaker to wipe a 50x50 area into solid dirt, then make a bunch from there and in-game... Can't really do it that well with my current map b/c pretty much everything I built is within one or two bits. Until the ending, the whole darn thing was under 1 meg, lots of verticle... and hard as hell to follow going layer-by-layer.
I'm also testing some trap designs... I had a hallway where you run down, and it triggers water in TNT one block to the left of the block the plates are on, with water to the left of the TNT so it'll go without ripping a hole in the tunnel or revealing itself. I can't decide if the tunnel should be longer or I should give people an obstacle, like sand or something. Making a longer tunnel is interesting but the TNT keeps launching further down, so people might not be able to survive.
So was I right or wrong about the spawn being in the wrong place? I deconstructed the place a little and I'm almost certain the spawn is near the end. Could you please look at it and fix it, you map does look like a lot of fun.

Yeah, oops... I have like 3 different versions/saves because I tested it and kept saving etc... I'll upload the right one now and fix the link. That and you can just ditch everything, die, and go a little up the hills and to the east where you can find a pit with a tree and water on a few sides.
I should make one of these. They're even more fun to make than to play through :biggrin.gif:

Would you mind uploading it as a .rar or an uncompressed file?
7zip doesn't like me, and I don't like it.
But, I'd really like to try your map :tongue.gif:
Uploading now, gonna post link once it's done...
Done. That took a lot longer than I had hoped, eugh... Finished the map, replaced links, added a lot of "notes" at the end :wink.gif:
Should have a really fun ending if you read everything. Short, but lots of fun.
Umm... I don't know, let me check... that's really weird. Testing around stuff now, update in a few minutes...
Fixed and downloaded, just a zip now :smile.gif: Tested, too.
Those mechanics were actually me testing stuff so I'd remember... The actual mechanics aren't much different, but some of the wiring was a sheer pain. Especially the first lava room... omg I hate that room, I had to fix it like 3x over >.<
As for the paintings, they're with the wooden sword. AKA look around the exploding ladder area; you'll need a torch to actually see the button. It's near what looks like an obvious doorway of stone :wink.gif: I think I hid that one pretty good, despite not being far off/well hidden at all.
Yeah. Btw, I hate that room. It took a long while to figure out how to flood properly (hint: using a giant square of TNT with a gianter square of water= shoot yourself instead)... Then I found out how to flood it PROPERLY using only 2 water thingies for each level. Then I had to remake it 2~3 times. I raged SOOO much on this map... And now I'm making an ice base to explore.
Did you find the wooden sword?
For anyone who can't find it, take a left when you see the escape ladder (and all that spoilerific jazz), before you find the frozen facility. Use some torches and search for a button down in some stone :wink.gif:
Here it is, at least the in-progress version... I finally got to a point of making it more atmospheric, right at the end, so... yeah...
