Maybe when you place an obsidian block a 3D diamond shape starts floating? Then you could build a massive base, but you would need multiple obsidian blocks to lift it, and when one obsidian block is destroyed, then part of your base comes crashing down. That would be AWESOME. Plus, it would look like a lot of huge spikes coming out from underneath the island.
Either way, we won't have collapsible terrain any time soon, if at all. Notch discussed the reasons for this early on in infdev development. The biggest problem becomes that if there is a floating block, you don't know whether it is truly floating or connected to the ground in the neighboring chunk. To know for sure, you have to load or generate the chunks around it. If it must generate the chunk, it will have to check for other floating bits there and repeat the process.
Even if it's just loading, it is a difficult problem. Suppose you make a 5km sky road and cut out the one support holding the whole thing up. It has to load a 313 chunks in just one direction and check them all to make sure there are no other supports, and then drop the whole damn thing. The bigger the falling structure, the more difficult the task of falling becomes, and there is no size limit in infdev.
If sand can fall that nicely down, then why can't islands move smoothy sideways?
Because the sand is turned into an entity, and then turned back into a normal block. If one were to convert an island to a huge number of entities, the game would slow down and it would be more expensive to detect collisions between the player and the island.
Ok, so what’s to stop someone with a floating, moving island fortress from just adding some "lava springs" to the side of said fortress and burning all they survey under a never-ending flow of fiery death?

Note: I now like this idea.
you mean what could stop them from having a floaty lava spawning death-trap? :geek:
Simply removing the Floating Rock ( assuming it isn't Obsidian) from the island, if there is no rock,
the island will simply fall...If you meant how to stop the lava alone, that's up to you. :biggrin.gif:

Not quite, what I meant what was what would stop someone from building an orbital bombardment lava ship that will hover over the map drenching everything it sees with a never-ending flow of lava IF floating objects become able to move and lava physics stay the same.
It would be like having your own airship with an orbital cannon attached to the bottom of it. Burning anything or anyone it passes over.
Not like anyone would ever want one of those when mulitplayer comes out.
Anyways, I think that Falling islands would be cool.
LIke, blow up the Obsidan Vein in the Island and watch it crash down. >:biggrin.gif:
Yeah, they do. I've had caves with dirt, but most caves have sand ceilings. And then, when I try to reinforce them, the sand falls down and I suffocate. Not fun. Hell, that's how I found the floating continent, leaving my old island, which had collapsed into a cave while I was mining.

Build a ceiling a with a block between it and the sand/gravel. Then you're safe.

I suppose, but whatever. I still don't want everything to fall. Even though I think my entire Floating Continent is built on a stone support (other than the cockpit), I still think this is not a good idea.

So don't hold your breath.

Also, what about caves? If every rock fell, there's be no such thing as caves. As for dirt, what about those caves with dirt ceilings.

You heard that, green and red.
