and not gold? as of now gold has no use other than being really rare... iron has many very helpful products you can make like armor and weapons, and there's a lot more of it, so people will actually need it.
I think everything will be currency, well except dirt and such. Really it's hard to say, because before Multiplayer, Notch plans to putting in a lot more stuff, and change the value of some things.
Money is just an item that is a universally accepted trade good, it doesn't matter if it doesn't give you anything in return, others will use it as well. Once you have enough people take it into account as having worth, you'll have a currency. Gold can fulfill just that because it's rare and can become precious, useless, worldwide accepted trade material.
wtf would you buy? Everything is so easy to get with just a little effort. If the point of the game is to mine, why would you pay someone to mine for you?
This thread is why we need to have some kind of Multiplayer to test these things out in. There's just too many dynamics in multiplayer that can only be discovered by playing.
My bet will be dragon scales will be the official currency of minecraft. Which is to say nothing will be the official currency. Because there are no dragons.
I don't really see it as being much more than "Hey, does anybody have some extra [block]? I'll trade some [block] for it, I have more than I know what to do with."
the purple rock you get from lava on water. it is really hard to mine so its worth alot even if its one of the regenable building metirals
Regenerable and impossible to acquire.
I was thinking about this, and if we do get a more RPG-focused Minecraft survival, it'll be either iron or, from the look of things right now, lava buckets.
No obsidian as currency please... It is possible to make obsidian factories which means inflation

Give me an internet, or Chuck Norris will kill you!!!
I post too much.
Gold is used for a lot of things. It is sometimes used in computers and has a few medical uses.
None of them relate to Minecraft, though.

then again, you could always hook up your buddies with fresh meat if the guy cheated you out of something...

it was dirt and dirt is all the same
i tilled it with my two hands, and i called it my very own

Regenerable and impossible to acquire.
