I thought that it would be fun to do an old school pre-multiplayer style coperative map in InfDev so, not finding any, decided to start one. If you don't know what I am talking about it's basically a level that someone plays for a bit saves then uploads it to a file sharing site and someone else downloads it, plays for a bit and repeats.
Some of the ground rules are:
1. You can only hold the file for 3 hours. After which you must re-upload the map.
2. Post saying you are going to take a turn as soon as you download the level.
3. Don't waste resources or greif anything. (We will just ignore your uploaded file if you do)
4. Don't wander too far away. Try and keep the file size reasonable. (Under 20 MB)
5. zip the level before you post if back up here.
6. Have fun and leave gifts for the next person if you want!

I tried that and the client didn't recognize it at all. So I think all your worlds are saved in the "World1" folder.

zip up the folder.
I could do that but then its kinda big and if you wanted to play it you would have to back up your "World1" folder first then extract it. It would be a bit of a pain.
There is a single .dat file in the folder, could that be it? The file size doesn't make sense though.
I just thought of an interesting idea. The sub folders and stuff are the chunks and the single .dat file is a map that says where to put the chunks. As you wander around it generates new chunks and places them in the .dat file. That way your world one and world two can share chunks, decreasing file size and increasing speed. Sounds plausible to me.

I have three separate worlds, and three separate WorldN folders (one through three). You should just make four or five different worlds, then use the last one. Probably no-one will have that many different saves, so they could just download the World5 folder zipped, and extract it into the .minecraft saves directory.
To be clear, I'm pretty sure each save is in its own WorldN folder.
as far as i know the level.dat file is where your, inventory, environment, time, etc. is stored( like a .mclevel except without the map) and all of the random folders are little chunks of map that are loaded when within region. The only way to share the files would be tell everyone to have the last save box (world 5) free, and you would have to make the pass around level save in the last save box. Then simply post the whole world5 folder on a file sharing website and tell people to put it in their minecraft saves folder. If all goes well the last save box should say world 5 when you load up minecraft. This probably made no sense but meh.
I would like this, but can you stop it at like 10 mb?
and to share the world, zip the world(1, 2, 3, 4, 5) folder, and download and unzip.
if the world they post is already used, rename folder or overwrite.
Ok, thanks for the helpful replies. I'll post a zip of the "World5" folder in about 6 hours. From what I understand of file compression since there area lot of small files in the "World#" folders they should compress quite a bit. Maybe a 20 MB world could compress to 10 MB?

I guess We'll test this first. Could someone please download and try this save here and tell me if it worked or not. This is also the first map so if you want to take a turn and then re-post the updated one feel free. Thanks!

I just downloaded it, worked fine. Am playing around with it now.
Interestingly enough, the .zp was 3.3 mb, and after I extracted it Minecraft said it was 2.75 mb. File properties says it is 8.53 mb. Maybe MC doesn't count all the files or something? Odd.

Success! Yeah, I don't think MC counts all the files. I would be interested in finding out which ones it does though. I'm looking forward to seeing what you built. Just make sure you re-zip it before you upload.
