On infdev, I find it hard to settle down and make a base. Sure, I find epic places to do it, but chances are there is going to be a better place somewhere ahead. I have not even found iron yet, as I only mine cliff faces. Anyone else have this problem?
Well idk about your finding iron problem, but I beilieve settling down is important for various reasons;
For having a place to keep your furnace and workbench, staying safe from enemies (when they come to infdev),and for farming. I also think it's nice to have a roof over my head, not that it affects the game play, just make me feel safe :tongue.gif: I usually spend my days venturing from my little hut to search for resources, then I return in the night to craft.
And the beautiful thing about infdev is when I've harvested all the resources in that area I can uproot my little hut and build it in a more plentiful area. :smile.gif:

Haha. You know you've got a great game when the biggest problem you have is with forcing yourself to stop exploring.
I have that problem too. I just can’t force myself to create a permanent shelter. It seems I either just leave it behind and continue my adventure somewhere else, or I lose my house completely.
Not to mention I can never find coal, so my house never has light. (Makes it seem less shelter-y)
I build large towers which are impossible to miss for navigation.
To me, everywhere in /infdev/ is a challenge. There's this floating column I really want to build on at the moment which is just sitting there like, "Hah! You can't reach me! Suck on that!" and I want to prove it wrong. I usually just work on an outpost for a while, leave, build another outpost elsewhere then come back if I really feel like it.
It sucks that if you die or respawn you end up where you started when you first started the world, meaning if you've gone pretty far you'll lose your house or base or whathaveyou and have to start again.
Actually my first Infdev world, is basically just a big long highway from my spawn point to wherever I feel like exploring. Sometimes i'd build a house with a forge in it, or go looking for iron in a nearby hill. But basically, its just a big road. Since we cant pick spawn points, I can just follow the road to get back to where I was.
Settling Down gives you a nice place to store all your crap, and it limits your area of operation, so you end up mining deeper and finding better minerals.

Your friendly neighborhood dragon. Don't be scared, I won't bite!
I am here for you, Don't be afraid to send me a message.
Well, just give yourself a project to keep you occupied. In my case, I solve both problems; I don't get bored and I also don't stay in one place.
You see, I am creating an enormous bridge from my current mountain base just below the clouds, and I am going to continue building it until I hit another mountain. Currently I cannot even see my base from the end of the bridge.
Here is a picture of the bridge so far (View Image to see all of it):
My base is to the far left, into the fog. Those stairs lead to my little hut which contains a chest, workbench and furnace. It was taking too long to walk all the way back to my base to craft.

The more Swiss cheese you have, the more holes you have.
The more holes you have, the less Swiss cheese you have.
Therefore, the more Swiss cheese you have the less Swiss cheese you have.

There are 2 reasons to settle , security and storage. Furnaces and workbench do not cost much in resources , you should always hold a few of them when travelling to set up improvised bases. But it's not always trivial to have a mob-proof base you can always access and explore from. A good place to settle must be easy to find (if in cave networks) so that you can come back to fetch tools / armor / food to explore some more.
Not to mention it's just as easy to get supplies in one place and expand outward as needed as it is to keep moving nomadically.
I just find a Strait between cliffs and dig inside and usually hit massive amounts of iron and coal every couple minutes... BUT WHERE THE HELL IS ALL THE GOLD.
