"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.
Well, now I know why my game is slowing down. Is there really a point to generating caves so far away from you? I understand that's necessary for above-ground terrain generation, because you have line-of-sight to the draw distance, but with caves the engine could stick the whole thing in when you are a block away and you would be none the wiser. If it doesn't connect to the outside or another cave system, you wouldn't even have to calculate lighting.

If you can't handle /indev/ with its awesome caves, set the mapsize to small, inland, and turn fog the whole way up.
Oh, no, I meant this for /infdev/. I know notch is still optimizing, but it is silly slow right now, and I think the primary culprit is the liberal application of caves that aren't even immediately reachable. If cave generation was a background task that generates them at a more leisurely pace, it would go a long way towards helping the performance.
CAVES.
