Um. Use the hMod, it has EVERYTHING the vanilla server has + more. You can set it up to be vanilla anyway, and it allows you to choose exactly who has access to things like teleports and warp.
Oh wow. Poll results are surprising. 48% vs 48% with Yes and the alternative option, while No only has 4% of total votes.

I would if I wasn't an (apparent) idiot, because can't figure out how to install it properly. :sleep.gif:
Or my computer is an idiot. My friend Cal who installed hMod on his server, he failed to do it for mine. At this point I don't even know where the download is.
Hmod can be a pain to set up, but it works well. I'm going to have a hard time transitioning back to singleplayer after using warp so often.
Heh. Being the server admin I hack to help myself operate the server. So now I'm not used to being unable to hack. xD
But I always hated single player anyway. Why build these magnificent structures if no one is around to see them? Of course, you could either go for the "start of a new nation" mentality, or the "you're all alone, so you build to keep yourself sane until rescue that may never come" mentality. :tongue.gif:
I voted for why not make it server side. I always vote for what ever gives the players more options.

"I love how supporters of finite torches say they want a more challanging game and then in later threads talk about using peaceful mode when building."

^ Ditto.
Not all people play the same. I really think it should be server-side.
I think Notch's job is to make the multiplayer experience as close to singleplayer as possible (while being multiplayer, of course). Let modders do their thing with stuff like teleports.

No, when the main city in your server is 20 mins from spawn no /home kind of messes people up.
I'm a little confused at your comment. How so?
Not everyone builds what ends up being "home base" right at the spawning point. Some people end up going for a stroll first. Ours is like this, it's about a 7 minute walk in a straight line (now that we've marked a path with torches). To combat it, we built a minecart track that brings us back to our "city" if you will, from "home".
It was a great idea as it allowed us to just wander around exploring, we could always go home whenever we got lost, and then hop the cart back to the city. Now? We wander aimlessly, trying to find our way home if we're not paying attention. I learned the feature was gone when I went for a walk, I literally decided to just go for a walk and check out whatever I saw, I wasn't paying attention to where I was because I didn't think I had too (yes, my bad, but the point stands).
My vote is to put it back in. If you don't want the feature, just don't use it.

I agree with this. I think /home, /spawn, and other location-based teleports/warps should be either all-or-nothing if Notch natively implements them or left to the realm of modders. After all, that IS why he is developing a mod API, right?

Ah I see.
For sake of organization, I actually found a place to start building, then edited my game to move spawn to its location. I built a pyramid around spawn and called the town "Origo Acres", latin for Original Land. :tongue.gif:
I recently (FINALLY) figured out how to install hMod with MCAdmin after finding a very well written little tutorial. I'm glad to have spawn teleport abilities back.
However, I agree with you. It should be installed. I don't want to leave it in the hands of modders. I think it should be a server-side option, because no mod will ever be as well written as the game it is meant for. All mods, unless they are official DLC, are nothing but makeshift.

This is entirely untrue - especially for a single developer like Notch. Many mods are much better optimized than the game itself (I'm assuming that's what you mean by well-written)
And just look at any overhaul mod - I wouldn't call that makeshift (not for minecraft, but for other games. Such as the DarthMod, I wouldn't suggest playing Empires: Total War without it http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1126)

I respectfully disagree. Mods make the game unstable. Usually a well written mod won't be unstable enough to cause any problems what-so-ever, but considering how frequently this game is being patched and updated, the mods often render the game useless when they are temporarily uninstalled.
Perhaps 'makeshift' wasn't the word I was looking for.
This is just a simple poll. For sake of keeping the thread alive, just post something if you can. The poll is the important part.
Personally I think it should be a server-side option not limited to OPs unless I say so in the server configuration.
EDIT: Fixed the poll so it stops confusing people. You can change your votes, FYI.

You bring up a valid point.
Was it a bad idea to remove the /home command? No.
Should Notch have removed the /home command? Yes.
Ahah, heh, sorry. Let me correct this.
