Hello everyone, I did a quick search but couldn't find anything on this topic.
Anyway, I'm fairly new to MC and wanted to know something. I am currently building an irrigation system for my tree farm. Will this help my trees grow bigger faster or is it a wasted effort? If not then maybe Notch could implement this feature. It takes a long time to get steady water (lots of buckets lol) and I think the effort should be rewarded.
If so then great I will continue with my farming system.

As far as I know, trees don't need water to grow. They need at least 12 light to grow properly. Either from the sun, or underground with torches. What does need water is bamboo, and wheat. I swear, bamboo is the hardest thing to grow in the entire game.
edit: @Dual: Wheat doesn't require water to grow either, just speeds it up a lot. I've heard a rumour you can grow reeds with lava instead of water too. :3

Yea I know water isn't required but what does everyone thing of the idea that an irrigation system helps speed up and/or enable to grow the large trees faster?

Water doesn't affect tree growth, so the answer to this is no.
It would be cool if it affected the size of the tree (based on the proximity of water). That would give players better control over tree farms and decorative trees and such. I certainly wouldn't complain if Notch added that in the future.

Exactly, it wasn't a yes or no question. Hopefully when the hunger part of the game is implemented we will get new crops to grow and irrigation system will help grow them faster. It would be cool if it was applied to trees as well.

You worded it kind of funny, sorry about that. But yes, that would be a neat feature. But he needs to fix all major bugs first before adding anything. Otherwise, it will just be something like the halloween update all over again.
