All the hosts of these public servers are either stupid.... or naive. Of course people will grief! It's a public server you are hosting, and literally anyone can connect, and cause havoc.
When I think of SMP, I think of the likes of Civilization... host private games, and have some "conditions", or point to it. I'd like to see more than ugly-ass towers.
So I'm looking for some good, mature minded players who think;
- SMP is literally Survival, multiplayer style.
- Building in Survival/SMP is about trying to build/progress in the game, whilst keeping the landscape reasonably intact (like minimise the impact, not have big-ass holes everywhere).
- Building a little town somewhere and actually discussing and thrashing out planning first will be part of the fun.
- Having set jobs (Guarding diamond crates, hunting mobs, or mining for resources) in SMP is simply ridiculous. Keep it loose, where players help each other, but we have plenty of freedom to explore, mine, or build.
I live in Australia, so my "serverability" is pretty low - I'd probably be looking for someone else to host this, also.
As it is now, survival means dont jump of the biggest thing in sight.
Then you'd probably not like what I have just proposed.

So you're thinking about RPing?
RP-ing? Well... yeah... I think RP is almost always inclusive in gaming, period.. heck, I play Battlefield Bad Company 2 "in character", but people generally associate RP with fantasy, and I clearly do not want to be associated with hippity-hoppity-Harry Potter-like stuff.
From what I've seen, RP-ing offered in SMP is "take a job, and do it" - I'm thinking there is a better way.
Im just saying that as SMP is now, theres not much survival to it.
SMP, along with Minecraft, is in Alpha. I'm just trying to get some ideas out there now, in the hope I can join something soon enough, especially when SMP is updating (hopefully) to allow Invite only, or something to that effect.
Then I figured SMP would merely be these three things above, but in a multiplayer environment.
I played Civ IV multiplayer quite a bit, and there was literally zillions of game modes in it - the game itself can vary between game length, map size, and multiplayer modes like Hotseat, PBEM (Play by email) or PTBS (Persistent Turn-Based Server). PTBS is just Civ's fancy way of saying a hosted game, but you play 1-turn per 'x' (x being hours, or days, which again, you could determine). So when I played Civ IV multiplayer, it would be a case of visiting forums (civfanatics, for example) and either;
a. Opening a thread saying you want to start a game (ie a "Marathon, Large PTBS" game) or
b. Joining someone elses game by browsing through the threads.
Why am I saying all this? Because Civilzation is not only something I see has some influence on the core gameplay of this game, but also that it's multiplayer "mentality" should be applied to this game. Civilization never, ever, ever, ever, ever suffered from griefing. Frankly, in all the games I've played, I'd never heard of griefing.
In fact, I'm not at all concerned about it, because a few simple measures ensures griefing can never take place in a game. You want thieving/raiding to be a part of a game? Sure, by all means, join a game that enables thieving/raiding.
That's what I'm really trying to get at - game modes... and while they cannot be enforced by being hard-coded into the game (ie a no raiding option you could enable or disable, like a players chest cannot be accessed by another player), a simple invite-only mechanism would be the simplest way (for Notch) to get rid of this lameass ZOMG-I-discovered-internet-humour-trends-like-demotivational-threads-and-lolcats-and-ZOMG-4CHAN-and-now-I-must-act-like-I-consider-nothing-to-be-sacred-and-have-an-over-the-top-americanized-internet-brat-attitude-like-every-other-wannabe-4-chan-douchebag mentality that is plaguing this game.
In other words, Whiskerz (yes, Whiskers with a z) stop replying to this thread - post somewhere else where your replies have some level of relevance. I'm here to promote my style of game, and it will be private, and it will not be griefed by some 4-chan wannabe. That's not up for discussion.
Well this is just lame... this got pushed down to page 3... all I'm doing is looking for players to join me in a seriously awesome game... how hard can that be??
I very much see what you're getting at, and I agree with you on every single point. Oh, and you must remember, this community is a bunch of kids.

If you want something like this to work, perhaps wait a couple weeks or so until the game permits a more immersive experience (mobs, pvp, etc.). Perhaps PM me then, and I'll gladly join you!

Everything I have said has been relevant. Just because I say things that are true yet conflicting to what you want doesn't mean you should just say random **** to me to try discourage me, when what you are saying is not true.

Thanks man. I realise this game is somewhat kid-infested, so I'm merely getting my voice out there, so that players like yourself and I can team up and get something worthwhile out of the game (as it was intended, no doubt).
As for waiting a few weeks... well, yes... a proper game like this will need a more progressed version of SMP... however I'd rather get people interested now, rather than later.

Firstly - I think minecraft has enough scope to be at the very least modded into accommodating whatever game-mode is required.
Getting together for 'set times' of play is easy enough for close-knit groups, but for a more expansive community on one server it would be good to find ways to prevent the griefing/stealing of offline players.
Either way, by the looks of it so far, if enough people want something Notch seems willing to oblige which is the main reason this game is so awesome.
Secondly - Cottus Arci, ever play erepublik?
I'm not after a mod of Minecraft... just a more "pure" Survival experience, without any hint of Creative. I'm not too much concerned with "set times" of play - a think use of a private forum for this would work well, for example... I provide a Cartograph top-down map of the world.
And through some discussion over the forums, we eventually sort out something that looks like this....
That's a simple example... like we could break down individuals in terms of discussion general layout, positions of tree (parks) and wheat farms and even zone lots for each player to call their own and build their dwelling.
And yes, I play eRepublik - there can be only one Cottus! :tongue.gif:
i like how, you plan out where you have towns.
also how each town has town meetings to vote on specifc topics.
this would be very fun to play on, if you get a good server that can support many for a larger variety of towns
Yep - Simple rivalry between towns will only produce better results, right?
As for hosting, I've got a good enough desktop that could host this, but I'm concerned about lag as I'm in Australia, and it's renowned for having poor upload speeds. This kind of game will only be worthwhile if we get enough interested people.

I do that all the time and don't die!
As for the OP, sounds like that would make a nice server. I'm trying to limit myself to 2-3 servers, but otherwise I'd offer to join in with you.

Maybe I come from a different gaming background... where private games has a sense of security inbuilt into it.
Human error mother****er.
When I started playing Survival (after playing Creative for about 1 hour, then buying game), I thought it was a mix of three things;
Lost
Civilization
and
Simcity
Then I figured SMP would merely be these three things above, but in a multiplayer environment.
