If you wanna play CTF, there are 1564 where is this mode implemented (and fits much better). Minecraft is about building and surviving.

Since held objects can now be seen, you could play football. All that's needed to do is to modify the textures to make a flower into a football (Or a football block w/e) and have one player start with it and etc. The ball could be thrown to teammates with Q.
The only thing else that is needed is a field and a football skin.
What about tackling? do you brutally murder the other player with your bare hands?

I just thought of the silliest way to protect your base in SMP. multiple layers of cacti. I don't know if cacti can be burned, but with 3~ layers of cacti, any invaders would suffer at least 3 hearts of damage and either waste precious ham or be quite harmed. also passing through the opening they created would possibly harm them further.maybe also line the floor next to the walls with cacti, except on needed safe spots? I think it could be quite effective.

Cacti is flammable, so it's completely useless as a defense.
Moving away from base\chest QQ...
Bows and arrows got me wondering. Will a skilled archer dominate a skilled guy with a sword? How much do arrows do anyway? They seem to hit 2\3 creeps, which is in the range of an iron sword. Will bows replace swords for a majority of the combat once people have collected enough resources? Bows fire the same speed as you can click your mouse, unlike swords which have an animation.
Could arrows be TOO easy to get? I could probably get 5 arrows off in the time it takes to swing once with a sword. If you miss, you could always just "Spray and pray" with the arrows, which would make them quite deadly.
Are all registered hits the same damage? Is a hit to the head the same damage as a hit to the arm or leg?

I thought this was going to be people working together, not trying to kill each other for crumbs of supplies. i would rather work together with 1 other trusted person and fight against mobs and try to get as such supplies as possible. Defending your items 100% of the time against other players is not fun, and its much too easy to break a wall in someones place and steal their belongings.

I'm looking forward to SMP with great anticipation. The only thing I'm worried about are the idiots who come on and think the objective is to destroy everyone elses houses or bases. Especially if they don't live in your time zone. It would get extremely annoying to have to build a new base every day after some idiot (usually they don't speak English) comes along and thinks, "Hmmm... they spent a long time on this. I'd better destroy it."

That's one thing I'm worried about. I want to create a locked server where only people I trust are allowed in via a password. Its extremely unfair to have that occur to you, I mean, you can't defend you supplies and houses 100% of the time.

Are you sure about LCFs being implemented? I thought it was hotly discussed, and a lot of people are looking for alternative methods to make the game more fun for everyone without making bases too impenetrable.

Apparently SMP will mostly be on limited maps, so some way to regenerate resources will definitely be required.
Especially if you consider how quickly one can strip a limited map entirely. That'll go so much faster with more people.
