Hi guys, I'm having a hard time setting up my survival server. I'm sure it's something extremely stupid that I'm doing/not doing, but either way it's not directly addressed in the FAQ, so please don't get angry with me (because I did check for this solution before posting :tongue.gif:).
I have a dedicated file server at my house that runs windows home server. It's basically a stripped down version of windows server 2008, from what I understand. Anyways, I followed the instructions to a T (I believe) to set up the survival server, but when I join the server, it's in classic mode and I don't know how to change it. Also, I can join via the link that it provides me in the externalurl.txt file, but not via the IP of my server.
Can you guys give me any pointers? Am I just using a wrong file? Again, I can join, my port forwarding is done (and obviously works, I can join the server remotely as well as my friends) but I just can't figure out how to turn it into survival mode.
Did you download the server software from [/url]minecraft.net/servers.jsp[/url]? If you did, you downloaded the classic server software, not the Alpha. [/url=minecraft.net/download.jsp]Here[/url] is the page you want. go to the bottom part that talks about servers software and do what it says.
Although, I suggest using one of the server mods not the one on minecraft.net. My favorite is [/url=http]Hey0[/url], but you can any one you like. Hope this helps!
Also could you post an ip address here? I would like to join it. :smile.gif:

LOL thanks man, I was using the classic server files that you linked above.
Well, I still can't connect, even using the correct software. When I run the minecraft_server.exe, this is what comes up in the terminal:
[INFO] Starting minecraft server version 0.2.8
[INFO] Loading properties
[INFO] Starting Minecraft server on *:25565
[WARNING] Failed to load ip ban list: java.io.FileNotFoundException: banned-ips.txt (The system cannot find the file specified)
[INFO] Preparing level "world"
[INFO] Preparing start region
[INFO] Done! For help, type "help" or "?"
[WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?
What does it mean when it says the server is overloaded? Also, I still can't connect via the IP address of my server. Which address should I use? The one that starts with 24 or 192?
Thanks again guys. I will try using mods after I get the standard version working :biggrin.gif:
I got it down to this. However, I cannot connect via my laptop inside of the minecraft application. Everything seems to be working correctly. What am I doing wrong?

****EDIT*****
By the way, I'm remoting in to my server to edit it. I'm away from home right now, and I'm trying to access it through the interwebs, not the intrawebs.
Ok so this is what you do. Open up server.properties and find the part that says 'server-ip:' and at the end of that, add your PUBLIC ip address. The one that starts with 192.168 is the local ip. If you dont know your public ip, bo to whatismyip.com and it'll tell you.
I'm not really sure what the system overload is, but I have gotten it before. I just restart the server and it works again! Hope this helps yet again! :smile.gif:

The weird thing is, however, that I (and others NOT on my local network) were able to connect to the server via the browser in classic mode with the port forwarding in my router to the 192 ip address. The thing is when I changed the ip in the server.properties to my public ip address (which starts with a 2) I get another error message. However, when I attempt to connect to the server using that IP address, ONCE I got an error message other than "connection timed out: connect" after minecraft claimed it was downloading the map. All of the other times, I just simply get "connection timed out: connect-" when I attempt to connect using the 192 address inside of server.properties, but using the "public" ip address inside of minecraft on my machine, NOT on my network. If that makes sense.
I will once again attempt to change the server.properties ip to the public one and see what happens. Unfortunately, I can't connect to my server right now... and I can't figure out why :/ I guess I'll keep trying when I get home.

Hmm that is REALLY weird... I don't think I can help you here; I have only set up a server on my local ip. I hope you get the answer you want! Sorry I couldn't help you anymore though. :smile.gif: :sad.gif:
P.S. Are you using the original minecraft alpha server or hey0 or something else? xP
in server.properties just leave the IP blank. as long as the server has a static IP anyone in your local network should be able to connect via the servers local IP address and external clients will be able to connect via your external ip address as long as your previous port for classic was also 25565.

See if you can sucesfully set up a server on your local ip, and connect to it with a comp (other than the one that is hosting) on the network. Go to whatismylocalip.com to make sure you have the ip right, and start 'er up!
