Before the update, the server would use roughly 30% on 2 realtime dedicated cores during peak hours. Now after the update, the server can barely run with 10 people in it without ALL 4 cores bogging down. Its averaging out at about 90% on all 4 cores now....... I can barely run my server now. Anyone else experiencing this problem since the Halloween update?
I too have seen this on multiple servers that we run. I am seeing a spike from 3% CPU with 40 players (pre-boo update) to 75-100% CPU usage (post-boo update) on all of my servers. Very interesting.
Shutting down the MC server and making sure all instances of java and javaw are killed before starting the MC server back up seems to have fixed the issue for me.
Unconfirmed on friends servers though.
This did not work for our 40-man server. Even a full restart of the box didn't help either. Must be on Notch's side. . .
Can't edit my post, it says "Invalid form"... Anyhow, disregard my solution, it doesn't work.. while it did reduce CPU load it far from brought it down to pre-Halloween levels.
Hmm, I am seeing jumps from 17%-100% over brief periods of time on a "normal" map. Our community was tired of the noises and sounds of "cats being microwaved" from the "Hell" map option. Oh Notch
Confirmed here too. Since updating the CPU has been maxed at 100% and chat quite often takes 30 seconds to appear on the client end, though it appears almost instantly on the console.
I didn't want to start a completely new thread, seeing as how many are already out there about various problems.
Anyway, I'm just hosting a server for a couple of friends and myself, and it's bogging down the memory usage like crazy...
It takes on average more than one gig of memory just to run the server and client, leaving little room for smaller applications. CPU's at least doubled.
I don't think I had a problem with it before... is the update causing this as well? Is there anything I can do so that I might be able to be on SMP AND (no way!) browse the web?
I have fixed my issue (in Windows) by setting the affinity of java.exe to only one cpu, CPU0 and changing it's priority to low. CPU dropped from a constant 100% to around 35%.
To accomplish this, open Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and right-click java.exe. The options are in the context menu.
I found that the memory usage also increased exponentially.
I'm running a Linux based server and have seen my performance usage for CPU and RAM go up more than I would like.
I am seeing this manifest itself on the console with the following message:
[WARNING] Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?
I have plenty of free memory on the system and the cpu did not spike at all...
this is what performance monitor was showing during the time when I would get the following behavior on the client:
you break a block
the block vanishes but no resources pop out
then the block reappears again for a few seconds
then the block vanishes and the resources pop out
behaving sort of like lag but not really...

I'm not hosting a dedicated server, but I do host a server for lanparties. And I too have noticed a mega lag increase.
Before update, I on average would host about 8'ish people and not have any problems. Last night after the update, hosting only 2 people (myself and my g/f, on lan) we got random lag spikes in-game. And I got the [WARNING] like 4-5 times throughout the night on the server console. Strangeness.

Good luck.

EDIT: Does not help!
Not sure if this helps anyone but thought i'd post it after messing with the server.properties.
