Hello. My roommate successfully setup an Alpha Server in which all I had to do to join was run Minecraft.exe (the Alpha) from my computer, login, click Multiplayer, and then type in the IP address. Ran great.
When I downloaded the minecraft-server.zip software and ran it, the only way I could connect was through my web browser and the game was extremely limited...i.e. I had no inventory, no health, and all I could use were certain blocks. No actual crafting of anything. And I had to copy and paste a URL to connect. I could not use my own Minecraft.exe program.
Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Its seems you just don't have an understanding of networks. Dont worry, ill help yea out :tongue.gif:
When you host the server, inside that link is your IP, its the 192.168.X.X part, use that to enter your server using minecraft.exe. If the server is on the computer your playing minecraft from, you can also use 127.0.0.1 to join the server.
Just run that, wait until the console says done, close the server. it should have created a few files, one being admins, open it and add your name. you can also open server.properties with notepad and edit some of that stuff if you wish, but it is not entirely needed. Though you should add your ip to that file. Again, its the 192.168.X.X part.
To find your internal IP, Hit windows key + R
Type in cmd
inside the command prompt, type ipconfig
there will be a line that says "IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.#.#" <-- That is your internal IP.
Add that internal IP to your server.properties file at the "IP=" field and hit save.

Where are the created files at? I did a search and didn't find anything. Server.properties file? I found something that say this.
#Minecraft server properties
#Sat Dec 18 18:52:31 PST 2010
level-name=world
hellworld=false
spawn-monsters=true
online-mode=true
spawn-animals=true
max-players=20
server-ip=
pvp=true
server-port=25565
Where do I add my name? or other peoples names and IP addresss?

For your server problems, I am not sure how to fix them as I have only played around with the exe server. ->http://www.minecraft.net/download/Minecraft_Server.exe?v=1285545870503

Hope that helped.
