I think that the material we need for lanterns will only be found in hell, BUT it will be abundant in hell. This would make sense because we will most likely have to craft hell portals and even though we have to work our way up to it, it won't be hard to make.
EDIT: Also, slime could be used as the material, but only if slimes spawn on a certain biome. I remember they used to be more prevalent than AIDS but now they're an endangered species. :tongue.gif:
Yeah, I'd like Tiered Lanterns, but it would take up max. item space.
Personally, I'd just like two-three tiers.
We coooould have one lantern that burns coal (not very bright) and another which would burn the lightable resource found in hell/fish oil. Then have a final one that has a diamond to reflect the light, where it would work sort of like a flashlight, shooting light far in a beam going one direction.
And also.... :smile.gif: Iron is about as rare as coal. Just underground and the veins have maybe half as much. It is NOT hard to find.
You must be one heck of a lucky dude. I've gotten maybe one stack of iron total, versus like 4-5 plus for coal. Then again, I don't know what kind of miracle veins you have, but my coal veins seem to be like 5-10+, and my iron veins I swear always have like... 2 or 3.
My experience exactly. In several different survival games. Maybe I'm just unlucky. And I understand finding ore in natural caves as opposed to just mining through rock for it. Actually, though, I find more iron by using the "dig straight down and hope you don't die" method.
I love the idea of tiers for lanterns, however include more material tiers than originally posted.
Maybe something like this:
Wood lantern - short time, same light distance as torch.
Stone lantern - long time, same light distance as torch.
Steel lantern - long time, more light distance than torch.
Gold lantern - short time, incredible light distance (used for light houses?)
Diamond lantern - very long time, incredible light distance (used for light houses?)
AAAAAnd because i want to see a use for slime, slime can act like grease. Grease fires are incredibly hard to put out, So add slime to any lantern tier and the time becomes unlimited? or just lengthens the time?
There should be a lantern that you're able to carry as you walk, giving off a faint light that would make underground cave-exploration all the more eerie. Besides, I hate using torches to light up a cavern only to find that it's a dead end after a few turns.

The only thing I'm not terrible at is being terrible.
This has most likely been brought up, but Imma say it anyway.
I don't think torches should burn out on peaceful. Clearly, if you're on peaceful, you just wanna mess around in the awesome sandbox game we know as minecraft. (that's what I like to do) And iron is so overused. I only find about 2-7 blocks a day. (real-time) And, with the upcoming features that I don't want to say to prevent going off-topic, I would like to have infinite, cheap lighting, so I can play the way I want.

torchs might be easyer to build. but can you carry the lanter and walk so you have light while you move. and to add mroe oil press I and there will be a extra part that says oil if you hold it. add oil from fish or something and there you go. a moveable lantern

First of all, torches should flicker when they are nearly burnt out.
Second, torch duration should be tied to difficulty level where peaceful = torches stay lit forever and hard = torches last about 10-15 minutes realtime (just enough to last through a night)
Also torches that are about to burn out drop a burned out torch when knocked down (to help avoid getting around lighting torches by knocking them down just before they burn out and just placing them back on the wall new)
Maybe in Hard difficulty, all knocked down torches are burned out >:biggrin.gif:
For the lanterns, I think based on the 3 billion freaking complaints about it, it would be safe to assume that for some poeple and some worlds, iron is rare or hard to find. Yes, I understand that some of you have iron flowing out your wazoo, but that's not the case for everyone so try to keep that in perspective please.
For that reason, I think the tiered lanterns would be a good idea. They should consist of a cover (glass), a base (stone, cobblestone, gold, iron) and a lightsouce (cloth wick or torch or coal or something from Hell) and consist of a quantity 1 of each to yield 3 or 4 lanterns. Better base materials yield a brighter lantern.
I just had a cool idea about that.... Lanterns made with iron work underwater! Sweeeeeet!
Here is a torch-only partial workaround for areas that you're actively working in. About 5 -10 minutes after you place a torch, place another next to it. When one is expired or about to expire, relight or replace it. A bit of extra work, but you won't be left unexpectedly in the dark.

Try my mod Sparcs Tweaks Better dungeon loot, bones in dirt, Witch hut loot, ect
A couple points for those nervous about the change:
* We don't know what recipe lanterns will use, and i read somewhere that Notch is aware that iron's overtaxed as a material (so i doubt he would just use that).
* We don't know how quickly torches will burn out; it could be over a night or maybe last weeks ore more (in game time).

What use is an ear that does not hear, or a mouth that does not speak?

classic lighting option is also fancy. Tammama is grateful that someone made such a suggestion.

Heres what i want for a lantern:

i know for the diamond shape... i just want easy resources.
Yeah, i'd rather lanterns be like this instead of consuming lots of iron/steel.

This pattern here takes up too much stuff.^

OR you could just use NBTEdit and put them in.
