I think you are all missing the point Gladosexe is trying to make... Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of having the Nether. But the point Gladosexe is trying to make is the update was useless for him. He obviously had much higher expectations. And I would have to agree that it is incredibly boring down there and there is not much use for it in my world's other than travelling to a very far undiscovered place quicker. Hopefully in coming updates Notch will make Nether more worthwhile and interesting.
I think you and the OP are missing the point actually.
When Notch was making the Nether he never said. "This will be end game" nor did he say "The objective of the nether is to challenge you"
What he did say was that the Nether exists as a "fast-travel" dimension and in that respect it works fine, it is specifically as worthwhile as it needs to be currently and is interesting imo. If you had expectations further to what the Nether would be then i'm afraid it's your own fault. Imagine how "Worthwhile" the fast-travel system would be to everyone else if the Nether was as "challenging" as the OP would've wanted?
TBH i find the nether more treachourous than the normal world enough even ignoring the two mobs that reside there. Most of the environment consists of long drops or lava, all you have to do is let go of the shift key when building a bridge at the wrong time or not look where you're going when dodging ghast fire and you're gone. Hell my very first portal into the Nether is on the edge of a cliff facing lava. If i exit the portal on the wrong side I have a long hard drop into some hot hot death. I think the nether is fine currently, serves it's purpose, it'll be a lot better when the blocks found there have a crafting use but meh.

We can be like they are,
Come on baby,
Don't fear the creeper,
I like the nether, its a fun place to go get some pig meat and have a challenge at the same time.
Though I was not happy on the day of the update and a pigman killed me. Then the inventory bug made me lost all my stuff and I kept getting spawn killed by that pigman in the nether. Curse you pigman!
The ghasts are fun though, I thought like 5 spawned together but they were only 1x1 not big huge floating marhmallows that fire missles from there mouths.
Lava can be a pain to find, however, when found, usually comes in mass amounts.
Anywho, I do think the nether is a bit easy. I think that ghast bombs are way to easy to doge, if you just keep moving then they won't hit you. If you stay still you can hit them back. Simple. I think monsters shooting up out of the ground or something would be awesome. When notch said he "fixed" the glitch where pigmen spam sounds when they catch on fire, I was dissapointed, as this made the sound of the nether much scarier than the sound of fire.
But yeah, the Nether isn't finished.
Have you ever had 5+ ghasts all firing on you at the same time?
Trust me, dodging is not easy.
Anyhow, you STILL don't need diamond to make a portal. Obsidian, thankfully, can be CREATED, instead of mined. Just make a mold, get some lava and water, and get to work. Lava is easier to locate than Diamond ever will be.
This is debatable. I've found 8 diamond, and never any lava. EVER! I pretty much just gave up on getting to the nether at all.
The whole fast travel dimension idea never really made it worth the effort. Nether needs some proper rare blocks or rare items that need nether blocks. Lightstone was a fair idea, but it needs to be a source of magical type materials.
Things that could come from the nether:
A different colour of redstone, to allow more complex circuits.
A substance to make better arrows or swords.
Something that allows us to use all the dye colours for cloth (Crystal block, for making vials).
Different colours of diamond, like emerald or ruby, for building or aesthetic purposes.
An alternative evil spiky cactus.
Different colours of glass, from special sand.
Wierd looking hell plants you can grow.
Skulls, like creepy pumpkins.
A type of sponge that sucks up lava instead of water.
Am I the only one that thought the nether, the main feature of the update, was a major letdown?
I think zombie pigmen are the worst part. They are relatively easy to kill, and cooked bacon makes survival even easier. Ghasts are fun though. But I was expecting more ass kicking, block destroying, fast moving, etc mobs. I honestly feel safer in the nether then I do in the normal world (at night).
However, I have no reason to go to the nether. Only thing remotely interesting in there is the slowsand (it combines nicely with cactus ^.^), and I guess in some scenarios the lightstone would be useful too. But lightstone is so inefficient! The bloodstone is nice because it never stops burning, but logs do the same thing for the most part. And there's always the fast travel purpose, but I walk a decent distance and I end up half way across the damn world. Not fun.
Hell should feel more like endgame content. I shouldnt be safe behind my glass wall. I want ghasts to spew explosives that can destroy more than bloodstone, and I want rare ores that are found in hell that I can do fancy things with, And I want more mobs.Namely hell creepers. They blow up even if you kill them. And they fly. And there big. And red.
So uh, tl;dr, hell isnt scary, hell isnt useful
As has been said time and time again in so many threads like these.......
This is ALPHA. So there are many more things to come both in Nether and real world I'm sure.
Guess Notch shouldn't had updated the game. Since that just made you dissapointed that he did. I'm sorry man, but what's the big deal. "The Nether sucks." Compared to what? No Nether? Yes, yes, yes the Nether should be harder but all your saying is that it's not hard YET.
It's still Alpha. There's still updates. Hell will get better.
We still got the latern update. Don't we?

Bellow statement is true.
Above statement is false.
Honestly, I swear thousands of people joined just to complain about this, because before we knew ghasts existed and before pigmen existed at all we had knowledge of a strange dimension, in which we could place portals close to eachother and they would be far away in real life, but it would be dangerous. We would be thrilled at this "fast travel" system, and when it was released it wasn't finished. And still we marvel at it; it's new, it's a herald of the days when it will work, and now it's useful for blocks and materials.
