make a portal inside a room in the Nether (torched or untorched, doesn't matter) close the room with a door or blocks or something... go away and wander the nether for a while... go back... and you will find one zombie pig man inside your portal room. (This actually happened to me a few hours ago... twice)
I have not been listed as a Pigmen Researcher yet but I'll upload my findings.
Question:Will Pigmen find safer locations within a given shelter and will they use stairs to reach theese points?
Hypothesis:Yes I believe they have a smart enough A.I. to do this
Those are the outer stairs leading to upper level.
And those are the inner stairs also leading to the upper level.
While doing this experiment we (Pigmen and I) were under siege by Ghasts (No suprise :tongue.gif:)
As you can see here the Pigmen was trying to get up the stairs to higher and safer ground. But before I took this picture I captured this...
As it seems 2 Pigmen manage to get up the outer stairs to get to the upper level. I believe that this Pigmen called in the other Pigman on the lower level to get to higher and safer ground. If true this states that Pigmen do strive to keep together and help out one another.
This Pigman found a even safer room within the walls of my base. It had a step that needed to be jumped over meaning he intentionaly tried to get to this safer location.
Conclusion:After seeing this behavior in similar patterns multiple times it is true that Pigmen will find safer locations within a shelter and use stairs to get to there desired location. Also I devised a theory that Pigmen will communicate to help each other.

Three things are required for Earth to live in total order - One,A major decline in human stupidity. Two,A Miracle. And three,War
i am taking a Jane Goodall approach to the pigzacks (my nickname for the zpm as zack is slang for a human zombie in the book worldwar Z) there is a large tribe that inhabits a cliff and tunnel near my main portal I will study them to see if i discover any new A.I. with them
on a side note they are terrified of ghasts i am testing if this translates into a fear of white by intoducing wool/cloth to them
Firstly, the ZP AI is simple. It isn't as advanced as you think. You won't successfully find accurate conclusions with in-game testing, you will with observing the actual coded AI.
But if you insist, here are the rules for scientific experimentation.
Firstly, make an observation. For example, observing that pigmen are pretty volatile to getting roasted by flaming areas of the map. They don't seem to have the intelligence to avoid the fire.
Secondly, make a hypothesis, or a statement that can be tested.
For example - "If pigmen are near fire, then there is nothing in their AI preventing them from mindlessly walking into the dangerous areas."
Thirdly, set up an experiment.
Independent variable (what you change) - the area of the map on fire
dependent variable (what you measure) - the percent of pigs who wander into the fire
control - have a group of pigs contained with no fire in the area
examination group - a group of contained pigs with fire in the area
Fourth, execute the experiment.
What did you find?
Fifth, form a conclusion.
"When pigmen are exposed to fire, then it is likely that they will wander into the fire."
FINALLY, AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT! The definition of a scientific theory is something that has been tested many times and is regarded as scientific fact!

<insert lame link and/or snappy/creative comment here>
<really annoying quote that has it's own scrollbar here>
^^ This gets really annoying when trying to read through a thread and getting stuck on signatures. Really disrupts the flow.
bad news my tribe was oblatrated by a ghast
good news I found an even bigger tribe who live in a large tunnel that leads to a sheltered cape on the sea of magma
great news i have gotten over my fear of ghasts and have killed 2
side note : ghasts are stupid and not worth studying as i saw one drown in the sea of lava and so far no less then 6 die via lavafalls(lol) our sheltered cape is also a great way to observe ghasts safely (my render distance is set to far)
Did you guys know, I came up with the idea for Zombie Pigmen?
Ignore this hack. The idea for Zombie Pigmen came to me in a dream three years ago. Notch is obviously psychic and must have picked up on it. I'll let him use my idea, though, because I'm a nice guy.
RULES FOR A SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS:
All right. Thursday is the day I follow rules, so here we go.
OBSERVATION: Zombie Pigmen congregate in large groups.
HYPOTHESIS: Zombie Pigmen like to have tea parties.
Independent Variable: Amount of mushroom soup offered.
Dependent Variable: Number of Zombie Pigmen who join me at the table.
Control: The group of Zombie Pigmen over the hill who are too distant to RSVP anyway.
Examination Group: the Zombie Pigmen between the twin lava mountains.
A number of Zombie Pigmen came to enjoy the tea and mushroom soup, but a stray Ghast shot destroyed all their good china and I haven't been welcome back since.
Zombie Pigmen are both vindictive and protective of their good china. Ghasts are assholes.
