Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Y'all shouldn't be telling each other to shut the **** up about different things because it's our opinion. Just agree to disagree, don't go down to that level, seriously.
I know huh.... I mean you can't even walk 2 blocks without running into a game-breaking bug where you can no longer play.... (I played SWG for 7 years and it has 100x more bugs than this game)
On a serious note, I give this update an 8/10. It provides new game mechanics and a framework that can easily be expanded upon. I imagine special MoBs for each biome with their own special trees/plants. I envision the creepiest of monsters and the rarest of minerals in hell. It's amazing. I only rate it 8/10 because of a few bugs/small biomes.
ive seen no additional lag. ive got no crashes. textures are working fine. i dont know why it happens to everyone else.
there are 3 lanterns. the hellstone, the lightstone, and the pumpkin.
biomes kind of disappointed me, since most of the map was just grassy with different colors. id like notch to make more snowy and desert areas. it makes exploring more fun though.
the nether.. when ive read 6 new blocks types ive expected they all will be inside the nether. i was disappointed. the nether is currently kind of boring, only uses are lantrens. it provides a nice survival challenge, though.
the portals.. that was an obvious bug, and im disappointed notch did not fix it, since its a rather easy fix. atleast bug is more of an annoyance then gamebreaking.
SMP.. the biggest problem. fixing SMP is alot harder then most of you think. i advice looking at halo 1 and bungie (a big company) failing to sync the AI. google this, and youll know how hard it is to do multiplayer. mojang is only 6 people, how do you expect them to succeed where bungie and other big companys failed? not to mention minecraft has quite alot things that needs to get synced.
I disagree with the OP though I respect his opinion because I'm not an angry child. So someone things the update wasn't up to snuff with what it was promised. It's pretty much true, but I still enjoy it.
Most developers only let a select few people play the BETA
Most developers don't charge money for people to play test their BETA software. Let alone anything ALPHA. I'd say the real chumps are all the ones who paid money for ALPHA software. I wish I thought of making something that was ALPHA - meaning not fit for release by a long shot - AND get chumps to pay me and make me rich AND have these same chumps defend me no matter what. What a bunch of chumps.
You are getting around a 30$ discount on the game for dealing with all the bugs and glitches.
If you wanted a perfect complete game you could have waited till notch was done then shelled out the 40$.

The lag is momentarily- I believe that the game needs to make a temperature table for the old maps.
Yeah, I thought the Nether would have 6 blocks, but it only has three...
SMP is another thing, I don't mind it being incomplete, but at least add health. It's the only thing people ask for, not pumpkins and bugs. As long as SMP has health, it will finally be able to get a playerbase, since it's no fun to survive if you are invincible.
I agree OP most of these people are so blinded by fandom (i really like the game too) they cant see the problems with this update that took over a Month and 10 days to get out. Im willing to give notch the benefit of the doubt, but how can the update's main advertised feature (portals and hell) be broken??? Did he not test this **** at all??
Mod locked the other thread for I don't know what reason as almost everyone save a few people AGREED and called everyone that paid money and disliked this update "chumps".
SteGriff: I guess we can't create a thread about the Halloween update in the MINECRAFT HALLOWEEN UPDATE forum. You do realize you insinuated that we are all chumps. Not very mature for a moderator... oh wait, your 17 my bad.
Give me a break, alpha or not this is some pretty shoddy work. Notch, I am disappointed! Anyone agree?!
First of all, when you get a thread locked, whether you like it not, don't be like a child stomping your feet by reposting. You may think what you were posting was interesting, but get a clue, the mods and the majority of the participants here find what you have to say neither accurate nor conducive to the community.
How many times must you be told that this is an Alpha product. You should expect NOTHING, other than to be a tester and report bugs. If you happen to have fun, that's a bonus. To call Notch a lazy coder is absolutely inaccurate and completely uncalled for. Walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you berate them. You have absolutely no clue how much work went into the update. You have no idea the dozens of hours that went into coding that your simple mind has not even a concept of. Your behavior and approach to this whole situation is pathetic. I could go on to explain why, but you're not worth the effort.
Dude, read! That's what you're for. You're a freakin alpha tester. Report bugs, test the game and understand your role. Otherwise wait till it's officially released and THEN you have reason to ***** about it.

Only problem is usually all the alpha/beta phases of games are free, this isnt. Even if its only 13 bucks, something like the portals not taking you to the right location should have been picked up by him before he released this. All im sayin..
Notch promises: Fishing, Biomes, pumpkins, 6 new blocks, 2 new mobs, Clocks, SMP bugfixes, AN ENTIRE ALTERNATE DIMENSION, 2 new mechanics and new sounds.
We get: Everything but 1 of the new mechanics and the bugfixes for SMP aren't complete.
We also get tons of bugs. But really what about "GIANT UPDATE RELEASED -> Many bugs!" is not understandable? That is like eating pancakes and being surprised you got syrup on your fingers, it is possible it won't happen but it shouldn't be a surprise when it does.
Most of the bugs aren't big and I'm sure they'll be fixed soon, the most annoying is the lose all your stuff upon death bug but just think of that as extra halloween difficulty.
Also where did you get this 8/10 thing? straight out of your ass? Most people seem to like the update or be slightly disapointed but I haven't seen many say it straight up sucks.
Although I did really want bugfixes for SMP I'm quite happy with this update for now because singleplayer became challenging and intresting again.
Hopefully we get Single player bugfixes in the next few days followed by SMP bugfixes next week or something.
To people attempting to combat the observation that Minecraft is in Alpha with the "revelation" that most games don't charge for playing the Alpha phase: you were told it was in Alpha when you CHOSE to pay for it. You'd have a complaint if you were led to believe you were getting the full release version only to be told you'd gotten an Alpha. Apart from that, even though other games don't generally cost money while in the Alpha or Beta phase, you WILL eventually pay for the release version unless they were intended to be free to start with. With Minecraft, you're just paying sooner than usual. Alpha doesn't have different meaning based on whether you get to play it for free or not. Whichever way you slice it, you still CHOSE to buy a game in its ALPHA phase. That's what you were offered, that's what you chose to buy and that's what you got.
To those who are so fond of accusing everyone who doesn't pat them on the back for bashing Notch of worshiping him and then complaining that they get flamed for having a differing opinion, I have something for you to try: Go to a Catholic church during Sunday Mass, walk up to the pulpit and announce to the congregation that you're a doctor who performs abortions. Once you've escaped the sanctuary full of angry Catholics calling you a murderer, try to find anyone at all who is sympathetic to your ordeal.
You don't see me bashing any of the "it's amazing" threads.
And for the people that say they love the game, they will love it no matter what is wrong with it.
Game could be crashing 100% of the time during login and one person will come in here and say its still amazing so those poll numbers are skewed.
Why is this update amazing compared to the previous version?
You do realize that there are people who will also hate an update, no matter what is good with it, right?
Your arguments to try and say that the update is lousy is analogous to trying to **** on someones birthday cake and say, "You're gonna die someday, so stfu *Slit wrists, slit wrists*"
Get something worth while to complain about, and in the meantime, relax by playing Minecraft.
By the way, if you want a bug ridden game, play Fallout.
Holy ****, people complain way too much about **** that doesn't matter or is completely ubiquitous anyway. You guys are lucky to have a direct line with the creator of the game and instead of thanking and praising him for his attempt to include himself in a community, you get assholes trying to tell him what to do.
While, on the other hand, companies like Obsidian and Betheseda are completely saying, "**** you, solve your own ****ing bugs" and the community reaction isn't even a fraction of the whiney bitches on this forum.
Seriously kids, shut the hell up and enjoy the game. Got a problem? Take some preperation H and then look at games with real problems. Final Fantasy XIV Online anyone? Oh how about APB?
**** off and lock this piece of **** because mother ****ers are going to attention ***** as best as they can.
Kudos to Llama. One person, with no budget, no company, and no access to the source code, created an AMAZING "rune" mod which does SO MANY FUN AND COOL THINGS, and is virtually bug free, AND works perfectly in SMP, yet the "amazing" Notch can't even get the sides of grass to match the tops in SINGLE PLAYER.
Because I'm sure that's as hard as writing a game with GUI from the GROUND UP by HIMSELF.

Rolf! How long you think it'll take the 1manarmyNotchman to finish the entire retail version on his own?
That's the problem, you think it's just a Greek letter. That Greek letter actually means something in software development. In this case, it's a huge yellow sign screaming: CAUTION: NOT COMPLETE; MAY NOT WORK. It does not have to resemble a finished product when it's not a finished product. "Alpha" tags a piece of software as NOT FINISHED. That was made very clear before you bought it.
Flip side. You cannot change the "rules" of what alpha usually means but only the rules that suit you - especially when you are selling a product to thousands of paying customers. (And that is the main situation that has changed here - the Alpha has been sold to thousands of customers).
...
Alpha is buggy and very feature incomplete, and imbalanced.
Beta is less buggy, feature complete, an imbalanced.
Released product (hopefully) is not buggy, feature complete, and balanced.
Now, you can have "Internal Beta" or "Open Beta".
Testing being open to public does not indicate alpha/beta/released status.
The game crashes. It lags. It has bugs. It is definitely not feature complete. And some bits are imbalanced.
Minecraft is in Open Alpha. Rare term, but technically the correct one.
GUYS GUYS GUYS....GUYS...THERE IS..NO..SUCH...THING AS FREEDOM OF SPEECH. IT'S MY WAY OR OBVIOUSLY WRONG ONLY.
Opps. My bad.
My god, freedom of speech doesn't exist yeah? This isn't a public property of the US of A, this is a forum on the ****ing internet. Moderators would be useless commodities if freedom of speech were even vaguely enforced. Yeah fine, you have the freedom to say the update sucks, even here, but everyone who disagrees has the freedom to say YOURE AN IDIOT WHO DOESN'T EFFING KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT. And guess what? They also have the freedom to tell you to shut up when they prove you wrong.
Here's my opinion, Notch may have added a somewhat small number of blocks compared to months past, but did the blocks have special properties he had to code? Did he code the map generation algorithm for a new world, as well as almost completely revamp the code for the regular world generation? Did he add new mobs and a new tool at the same time? Did he Make new textures (or I suppose get his new artist to)? Did he also simultaneously have to manage his new business and get everything planned for moving into a new office? No? He didn't do all that? So you're saying he was lazy is the past rather huh? Deal with the alpha, inventory bug is already fixed, he's working, deal.
Back in my day, sheep dropped brown mushrooms, and by golly we... Hated it, pretty much.

All in all though, awesome update.
Other than that, ignoring the portals, and even ignoring hell, fishing poles & biomes added a lot to the game IMO.
Also, AI is a little better.
Impressive considering there is only one developer.
Do you own Minecraft?
