Thought i'd mention it here, too, that the current average score in the "Rate the Update!" thread is 7.09 out of 10. This is .01 from being 8/10 people DISagreeing that this update sucks.

This is exactly where the problem lies. You seem to think we should all play peaceful or hard mode. Well to tell you the truth, your definition of a challenge is not the same as mine. There IS a middle ground which many players fit into.
Well I have been trying for the past 2 hours to not log in and rip all of you fanboy 'tards to shreds, but the replies to this thread just make me shake my head.
Ok listen up kiddo's, I'm going to tell you exactly what is right and wrong with this update. I'm going to list them most notable to least notable.
Pros:
#1 Notch fixed stairs so they are now placed in the direction you are facing towards the square, not based on any walls they can attach to. This is a huge fix and saves a lot of headache.
#2 Notch upped the difficulty of the game, turning it from a snore fest on hard difficulty to, well, actually hard.
#3 Monsters now have interesting effects of death on daybreak, zombies/skellies burst into flames, spiders go tame, and creepers turn into dirt. Neat I guess
#4 We got a rock that burns infinitly, yaaay.
#5 We got a light source for underwater, which isn't big for me. I think some people who enjoy underwater stuff like this a lot though.
#6 we got a useless nifty pumpkin head.
Other than that, I honestly don't even qualify hell as anything worthwhile. It gives you the blood/fire/rock/whateverbrimstone, other than that its a randomly generated enviornment that serves no other purpose other than as a way to get 2 new stones. Lol? Sure I guess its an ok way to move large distances fast. I just can't say much as to how good hell is yet, its too early. So far its boring, everything is made of the same 2 rocks, etc etc.
Notch could have at the very least made diamond/iron/gold/etc spawn in there in higher concentration, making it a worthwhile endeavor to go into for mining, but now I have 0 reason to really go into hell other than the rare trip to grab a new stack of bloodstone for fire spots.
Biomes are also pretty meh. The guy couldn't even implement some rain or snow or whatever for the biomes, they're just a tweak to random generation, and they are completely random, you'll have a tundra right beside a desert, heh...
Overall? We got a minor tweak to block placement and enemies, a new place to explore for 10 mins and then get bored, and 3 blocks that kind of server very situational purposes.
And someone in the midst of this Notch has pretty much managed to break something in almost every respect of the entire game. The whole thing is now in shambles. Inventory is lost when you die (kind of), HP is broken with armor, blocks are ****ed up, trees dont break down, rendering issues, lag is worse than ever, the list goes on and on and on and on and on.
I'm looking at this update, and for myself honestly the ONLY thing in the ENTIRE damn update that we even got that I find worthwhile is the fact I dont need to deal with lolstaircases, which shouldn't have been broken in the first place.
I don't give a crap if its alpha, beta, zeta, or pi. When you dangle an awesome update for an entire month in front of the playerbase and then don't even take the time to do ANY notable form of debugging for it, I don't even know, how are you people still eating this same old ****? I'm reverting my copy of minecraft back to before this update because in all honesty it was better before the update. At least all this **** still worked.
Whatever, enjoy your glowing blocks and burning dirt you waited a month for, I prefer a game thats actually functioning.
Funny how the update list didn't have "*Fix all bugs in SMP". Maybe you missed the memo that SMP working correctly puts the game in beta right? That Notch has been saying his priority after this update is SMP right?
Look at the list again.

Less bugs, more implemented feature.
He even had the audacity to check mark it!
Can you name ONE THING that was fixed? It should be MORE bugs.
Yeah, honestly, I expected to go into this update ready to play for hours on end, and I played for about half an hour, got bored and left. There isn't really anything interesting to do that will sustain my interest for more than 20 minutes. Hell, I spent 15 minutes there.
Finding a pumpkin, yeah good for 2 minutes.
Biomes, pretty alright. 5 minutes.
Watching my mods disappear when I loaded the game, and all the damn bugs, 10 minutes.
****.
Exactly, I can't play Minecraft for more than 20 minutes either. In the past month I must have played the game for 2 hours, and it was more frustrating than fun. At this point its not even worth the $13, I coulda picked up Fallout 1-2 and Planescape Torment, all for $10, now thats a deal!
cool. then rage quit or something. or, you know, keep whining about it like it'll do a bit of good. whatever. your time and energy. ¯\(._.)/¯
I have played for like.. since the update to now. Exploring, dying, finding the rare pumpkins, create safe house, create roller coaster, record them to youtube, looking at what people create here, thinking of revamping my dragon with bloody cobblestones, create new world to see more biome awesomeness...
If you feel the update feels not enough, maybe minecraft not the game for you.
This is the greatest update to a game ever. The industry will follow in notch's example. If you dont like it you can GET OUT!
LOLwut? Greatest update to a game ever? Nooooo way. Maybe greatest bug adding to a game ever, but not greatest update to a game ever. Not even greatest update to Minecraft ever.

Can you read? It doesn't say "*Fix all bugs in SMP" or even "*Health works in SMP!". Do you even know all the bugs in SMP?

Or I can keep whining about it, till it gets addressed. Works every time.
No, SMP is getting fixed because Notch said that was his priority and SMP working correctly marks beta. Constantly whining about it just makes you a *****. A self-satisfied ***** though when Notch fixes SMP like he was going to anyway.

Hay guys! I have a solution! Let's motivate Notch to do better next time by DDoSing the servers another week straight!! Or even better, lets just find a way to completely preoccupy his time permanently, so he's focused on that instead of the game! That's probably the best way to make him focus on the game amirite?! :biggrin.gif: [/4chan]

An average of votes out of 10 isn't the same as a percentage of people who agree/disagree with something. Anyone who rates it 10/10 is lying, as the update introduced many bugs that made it less enjoyable than it was pre-update. It definitely wasn't polished, but it added some cool things and over time the bugs will be ironed out.

OMG I DDOSed him so hard! I pressed F5 like a million tiems and now minecraft.net doesn't load! AMIGAD we r 1337 guiez! [/b].
Can someone explain to me why Notch said that there would be less bugs in SMP. AND actually check marked it?
He fixed stairs now facing properly, but now the game has a huge memory leak.
I guess he meant it literally when he called this the "boo update" lol.
guys guys guys guyssss.... let's all praise notch for this godly update so that when he comes back from his month long break he can do another great update like that!
No srsly, I had already said that if smp was still unplayable I wouldnt care about the update.. well that holds true. Hell is kind of pretty, but it's mostly useless. The monsters dont give anything new, the blocks do.. nothing new, well aside from a slow block which I most definitely will never use. Biomes are imo worse than a uniform map. They are too small and can hardly be distincted from each other apart from snow, sand and top grass color.. but well the side grass ruins it.
Then you got the pumpkin. Uh, okay, I cant grow them.. eat them.. so their purpose is decorative. Alright, cool. Then you got the bugs. leaves were already taking hours to decay since X update.. now they dont decay at all. You lose all items when you die, cool. Oh and the sound in hell, fun!
I ge it I get it. IT'S ALPHAAAA!!! Notch has other things to do too!!! Lalala. Oh and I'm not sure what the fanboys play aside from Minecraft, but goddam their standard is low. And yes, Multiplayer > Singleplayer, by far. If you are one who likes to play alone.. well you totally missed the point of minecraft.

Stop your bitching and deal with it. It's just a ****ing Alpha. Learn to wait too.
I love this game, but the update just felt rushed and incomplete.
Look at the list again.
