I love the idea of the biome's, but am a little disappointed in the current implementation. I'd like it better if instead of being able to see 3 or four different biomes, they were much bigger, and you had to travel a ways to move between them. (10x the current size would be fantastic).
Right now the land feels patchy where the biomes overlap and only feel right when you have the same biome repeated several times.

I'd like a more vast world, something to explore.

I actually agree with this. I entered the game and spawned in a dessert. Not 20 squares away a forest started. I entered the forest, and I immediately see a snowy area. Current spawning of biome's are way too small.
I think it would add to the exploration element of the game, that's something I enjoyed about it before. The way they are now it doesn't feel necessary.
The grass and foliage has been ruined in this update by Notch's totally ****ed attempt to make different regions change color. Once beautiful, bright and vibrant regions are now dark and completely unnatural looking. The color shades for the grass and trees are so incredibly plastic and flat looking, it hurts me in the soul. I seriously just stopped playing earlier. I no longer want to build, nor explore. The Nether isn't even enough to keep me playing. There's just no point to building if my creations and territory don't look nice. No reason to explore if everything looks so flat and bland and dark. No point in playing at all, really. Notch apparently has no idea what he's doing with the art direction. The reason the grass worked so well visually, beyond the nice, euphoric lime shade of green that was chosen, was because the bright color of the grass tops acted as a highlight while the dirt side blocks acted as a shade, which gave landscapes depth and form. Now it's muddled into one dark shade. There is no more form, no depth, no texture. Just these acrid, plastic greens that don't even work together. There is no more beauty. I can no longer bring myself to play. This update has ruined the game for me. I feel like a puppy just died :sad.gif:

In the beginning, Notch created the Nether and the Earth, and in it he made a man of sand and called him Steve. Notch made Steve strong so that he may punch wood, and lo, Steve was to have dominion over all square things.
Zahn, as you seemingly have nothing to do but complain, suggest you'd go and play a different game, then.
GOOD NEWS, everyone!
CERBRUS is comfortable with the hideous new look of a once beautiful looking game!
It's called feedback, Cerbrus, and I give it as one who loves the game, yet am exceedingly wary of Notch being somewhat of an amateur. The more mistakes he makes, especially with art design, the more I realize that he doesn't always quite know what he's doing. There's a lot of good in the new update. The Nether, for instance, is fantastic. I even like the name he went with. The new mobs are all great. Ghasts in particular are pretty badass. The sounds are all fantastic. But when your update totally changes the look of the landscape, which is basically the entire world, to something artificial and hideous, the feedback is more than a little necessary.

I've found a few biome regions that have brightly colored grass. Those are where I'd build (the rainforest I believe). And I love the direction, it's nice to have barren wastelands with no trees, swampy looking plains and a foreboding ice area. I just want to have to travel to get through/to them.
Your concern goes away once the biome size is increased. I'm hoping notch hears this, and the biomes become very large (giving us a reason to explore).
It still bothers me that it changed the look of all my explored land, which, originally, looked very nice. The beauty of the world, and what can be done with it, is like 80% of the attraction of MineCraft to me, and this update just totally ****ed up all of the world I'd explored so far, and all my creations, like someone just knocked murky blue paint all over everything.

I like the fact that the grass is dark green in the colder biomes, but it should be much more vibrant in the forest and grassland regions.
I'm working on a lighter, more colorful gradient for this. It's coming out fairly nice.

Try having snow stretching for over 2 kilometers in-game. Not fun. My spawn was smack in the middle of it, too.
What's the point of a tundra / desert if you can't get lost in them? They should stretch as far as the eye can see, and much further.
We also need oceans, but that's another matter.
Right now I'm working on a little color face-lift for the biome textures.

Biome sizes are really random. I generated a ton of worlds earlier to experiment, and find one I liked. I found some huge deserts, and then some small snowy areas, it's completely varied. Also, I like the different shades of grass, you are overreacting a bit when you say it's all been ruined.
It's not the fact that there are different shades, it's that the shades chosen look so sickly and dark and artificial.
See the image above? That's what I'm working on. That's what it should look like, more or less.

All of my friends including me loves this update, go watch the biome pic thread and you will see that most peopøe does.

That would be perfect just make it a shade or two darker.
Make it vibrant without looking Radioactive plox.
I'll work on balancing the colors first, and afterward, if need be, I'll tone it down. The last thing I want to do is start with dimmed colors, because it will be difficult the bring them out if need be. Though, I kind of like the vibrant look of it so far. I've seen it a shade or two dimmer, doesn't quite look right. But we'll see. Thank you, btw :smile.gif:

I like the new grass.. I do not like your grass, you make it look dead.
Ps. I hated the grass before the haloween update it looked so fake and like it was taken out of Mario..
Lol, my troll sensors are going berserk.

To the detail first, just because I have to address it-- I like the new grass. I think it's a vast improvement on the old grass, which I thought looked terribly fake. The old lime green was just too light and too sharp-- the new, more muted colors are, in my opinion, much better and much more realiistic, and the fact that they vary from place to place is great. And the old lime green is still available-- one just has to find the right biome to get it.
More broadly-- I agree that the only real problem with them is that they're too small. The transitions are a bit abrupt, but that can't really be helped in a world in which everything is made out of huge cubes. But it'd be nice if one could get in the middle of a given biome and look in all directions and see that biome, rather than seeing three or four different ones right next to each other.
I would expect that'll be sorted out over time. It could be handled (and probably already is) by varying the odds of a particular chunk being a particular biome based on what's around it. It probably just isn't weighted heavily enough yet, so there's too much chance of other biomes cropping up conspicuously. If it's shifted too far in the other direction though, then a given biome would be near endless, which would create its own problems. So a balance needs to be struck, and I assume will be.
But, for now, it's definitely shifted too far toward too many different biomes over too few chunks.

No, I agree. Your grass is too orange, and (especially on the left side) it looks like it's dying. I definitely prefer the darker shades of grass to your substitute.
However, this is just my opinion, and I respect that you dislike the grass as-is.

It is dying. Hence the "fall" theme. That's what happens in the fall. Grass turns yellow. Red. Dies.
However, this is just my opinion, and I respect that you dislike the grass as-is.
I respect also your opinion, though I do indeed disagree.
