How much obsidian for a Portal?

I hate to cheat, but it would take me past the Halloween update to find diamonds. I just need to know how much obsidian I need to make a portal.

You would need fourteen. But you don't even need diamond.

Just get water and lava and make molds to make obsidian. Stack the molds on top of one another and make a full portal without any diamond.

You need 14 pieces of obsidian. I think I'm set for a while cause I mined 50 or so today.
