Just for fun, I'm trying some experiments to determine how real/Hell distances interact (with results to be announced sometime after the update, I suppose). I'm building 3 portals within a few squares of each other in the 'real' world, and going to determine how far they are apart in hell (and if that distance remains consistent). I've also built portals at various vertical levels to determine what effect, if any, exit portals have on vertical height (IE, will my underground hellgate pop me out into solid ground and my tower portal drop me in the middle of the sky?).
I had imagined some kind of deal where you had your main base, with its portal, then in Hell, a protected Portal station you eventually built up with a safe tunnels in Hell to the various corresponding sub portal stations that pop back up in the real world at various convenient locales.
It's going to be fun building that network in Hell while dealing with the local mobery.
It *really* does remind me of The Ways (by design, but still).
Considering how minecarts are alleged to be incapable of interdimensional travel, I think that what I'll do is turn H-World into a sort of "subway" with stations at key points of interest. So I might have (Center) as one key point. Enter the portal and it takes me to an H-World station where I have a railway system in place. Find the corresponding track I've built to the place I wish to travel. Call my cart. It stops in the station... we'll say (North) and I get off... go through the portal... I am now in (North).
Of course, these won't be necessary for all of my travels and I'll have an M-World network of rails for shorter distances.
Main point, PORTAL RAILWAY NETWORK ... I need to make up a good acronym for that... :biggrin.gif:
All I want to know is this:
Can we make a portal on the ground, and if so, if I dive off a 100-block building, will I fly into hell at the same speed?
If so, that's how I'll make my portal network. BAM. Fly across hell, wind up slamming into another portal and with no speed loss, you'd pop out the other side. 1000 blocks traveled in two seconds.

These are the questions you're supposed to ask.
Well, I'd assume that Speedy thing goes in, Speedy thing comes out. But with minecraft not being so advanced in graphics and such, I don't think thats possible, and your idea calls for a horizontal portal, which I don't think is possible yet either.

Wait, you can lay portals on the ground?
No, you can't lay portals on the ground. They, so far, have to be 5 high by 4 long. Notch said different formations may come later.

Yay I have internets now! If you've ever felt like I deserved one before I had it just make it up by clickin' it now! ;p

I dont think you can lay portals on the ground and I am also fairly certain that all momentum is lost when going through a portal. :/
but what about the return trip? what portal will take priority over the others?
No idea. There should be like a menu so that u can pick.
Been thinkin' about that....
Please give me an Internet if you like.
I think Notch said on twitter that they wouldn't.

2. Portal in other dimension is automatically made
3. Those two portals are now linked
...der? That was the first impression that came to my head and I was assuming everybody else thought so too...
