First off, Glass requires No effort to gather. It is along the same lines of gathering wood, and thus it would not increase the difficulty of gathering lanterns of lanterns are just torch + glass.
"NO effort"?? How do you define "NO Effort"? Of course there is effort involved, even gathering wood. You must craft the axes. You must chop the trees. You must burn away the leaves, so trees can re-grow in the same area. You must plant new trees, or if you're clear-cutting w/o replanting, you must travel further and further from your base to find more trees. With sand, you must find it (sand's not as common as you think, especially after you exhaust all local quarries -- trust me, I know this), dig it out, and forge it into glass. Oh, you need to gather fuel for the forge, so now you need to gather even more coal or wood. How is all that "No Effort"? Do you make your wife do all the busywork for you?

Between Iron ore, and diamond ore, is a BIG jump in difficulty. After the update, there will be an even bigger jump in difficulty.
Don't have a clue what your tangent has to do with the topic at hand, but I don't agree. If you're gathering iron/diamond from hostile caverns, there's no real difference in the difficulty, except for how deep you have to go. If you're digging your own secure mine, then yes, diamonds are quite a bit more difficult to locate -- but I don't agree that it's significantly more "dangerous". The only real danger from mining diamonds is the chance of digging up into lava; but that's easily avoided, as long as your mining methods conform to OSHA Safety Standards. :smile.gif:

Therefore it is entirely safe to assume (yes, I know) that lanterns will NOT require exotic ingredients found only in Hell. And since Notch has made NO official statement otherwise (we have already established that his "Might have to go to Hell" statement is completely meaningless) there is no reason for any person to assume otherwise (as 00Lucas did.) Naturally, nobody will know for sure the crafting requirements of lanterns until patch day, and there *is* a very small, tiny, microscopic possibility (even smaller than 00Lucas's penis!) that I am wrong...but I'm willing to bank on this one and treat it as fact, thank you very much!

The point of alpha is to keep adding features and working out bugs.
The point of beta is to balance the difficulty of the game and then work out the rest of the bugs.
You can do tweaks in Alpha. There are no rules forbidding it. This entire torch/lantern change is not an added feature, it's basically patching what Notch considers to be an exploit. I don't agree that it's necessary, but hey, whatever.

That is why the possibility of having to go into a more hostile location then the surface if the minecraft world to make lanterns is a lot higher in probility of happening then you think. It might not be hell, it could be the last 16 layers before bedrock.
Too bad I don't know you IRL, because I'd lay a $1,000 wager that crafting lanterns will NOT, repeat NOT, require an ingredient found only in Hell. It would be stupid, utterly stupid. Think of it this way -- what if Hell doesn't work on existing maps? There is a very real chance that could happen. Everyone's existing world would suddenly become IMPOSSIBLE to keep lit on a permanent basis. If that happened, Notch would be forced to reverse the torch/lantern change, just to keep players from abandoning the game in droves -- it's bad business sense, it's wasteful, and it would be extremely detrimental to Notch's image as a game designer who actually cares about and listens to the community.
Maybe all that doesn't matter to you, but it does matter to a lot of people who have already bought this game, it matters to people who are waiting for a later version to buy the game, AND it matters to Notch himself. Seriously, dude -- unless you're just jerking me around for the fun of it (in which case, well played, sir!) you cannot reasonably be serious about being okay with "Hell-Only" lanterns, expressing indifference to how it will affect people with play styles that differ from your own -- unless you are an asshole, a moron, or both.
