Torches should be completely infinite, but they should produce just enough light to repel monsters (like Redstone torches). Also instead of 1 stick 1 coal gives you 4, it should be changed to 2 torches per coal. I think keeping torches infinite is required for newbies who don't have access to steel (since you probably need steel to make lanterns, and flint and steel to recharge torches). If I where on my second day I would hate to come back to base seeing a creeper or a zombie in my base after a hard day's mining and exploring.
I must say I disagree with you. Torches should work like real torches, and redstone ones should be used for programming purposes.
He meant that torches lose their flame down to the point they emit the same amount of light as a redstone torch, which could repel mobs from spawning in your base.
What I heard was that Redstone torches can only stop mobs from spawning, anyway I meant that they emit just enough light to stop mob spawning in a small radius and don't run out of light for reasons mentioned above. Also i forgot to mention their should be a option to have my idea above, infinite (no light decreases), and finite and a check mark for lanterns or not (so hardcore players can have some extreme survival and has to be toggled at the start of a map).
How about we have both? Have unlimited for the newbies who enjoy having the light and the light that will go out/need to be recharged. This could be done through the difficulty setting. Have Peaceful and Easy have infinite lighting, and have Normal and Hard modes for limited lighting.

permission to cus? TRUE ****ING DAT!! my god you people need to stfu bout these torches and take whats coming your way, its just A GAME you don't need to have panic attacks over features you want in it. go get a job, a wife, kids, A LIFE. now to tend to my b-17 ww2 bomberplane, i think someone ju-- OHH **** SOMEONE GRIEFED IT THE BASTARDS!! <-- fail.
To a point. I wouldn't want any game to be a screen saver with the words "Game over!"
Seriously, I don't. I really didn't think games like NetHack were really all that fun with all of the dying you had to endure. There's a thin line between being challenging and just being absurd.
And I don't think dying is the only challenge a game has to have. I like to have a variety of challenges, including ones that don't involve dying. Finding rare minerals and creating redstone circuits can be challenging, but they don't have to involve dying.
I don't think being "challenging" has to equate to seeing the "Game over!" message every time you play. A game can certainly be challenging without killing you.
I think there's a balance to be had, plus a variety of challenges helps.

Seriously, if you want an infinite light source so easily just go into INVedit and make a ****ton of lanterns.
BECAUSE YOUR WHINING DOES NOT CHANGE ANYTHING.
