Again, Notch is most likely doing this so we can't SPAM lightsources and must make a choice on placement. It will most likely be from Gold, Iron, or Redstone (or a new matieral) along with glass that Lanterns will be made up of. Iron is overused. Redstone, while cool, really has no use right now. Gold is also useless as well. Instead of adding materials with 1-2 uses or piling uses ontop of iron, why not expand the use of materials that are already in the game?
Have a choice, you can make iron lanterns as well as gold lanterns.

Why not expand the uses? Because they're nonrenewable. You can't manufacture ores. They're rare. Iron is used for tools, doors, etcetera. Gold has no real use. Glass? No glass. Sand is actually pretty easy to burn through to make glass.
I think that lanterns will have to be gotten from magical lantern elves that steal your gold. What you do is craft a net, and catch it, and then after you catch it, craft it with a sword to get the lantern as well as lantern elf limbs.
Lantern elf limbs can then be used as bait for fishing.
Please don't forget that torches will still be in the game, they will just burn out and have to be reignited, lanterns are just the permanent solution for a base, so they should be somewhat expensive but not diamond expensive.
if you REELY look at old lanterns that like the miners used in the gold rush, they had a a base, a candle on the base and a reflector dish behind the light so it reflects on surfaces. it should look like this
th torch should be what light source notch wants for it.
Lanterns are going to need to be moderately common, given how balanced Notch has managed to make the gameplay so far I'm sure he knows that.
Based on that, I'd say it pretty much rules out any rare materials from being part of the recipe (arguments about whether gold or diamonds are rarer aside, both of them are sufficiently rare). In addition, for a novice or casual player, gold is too inaccessible early in the game - and I doubt lanterns are intended to be that prohibited.
I find it far more likely they'll include simple, refined materials such as glass and maybe torches (or even oil, but that's another topic for another thread). Glass for example, requires collection of sand and coal, then processing in a furnace - easy enough to do but still significantly more effort than torches.
Other theories about "tiers" of torches are interesting, I suppose we'll know on the 31st! I wonder if there will be a Redstone lantern which have new properties for building circuits?
So you'd need a torch, plus smelting 3 sands and a stone, I'd say that's sufficiently coal heavy not to be enticed into lining your cave with them on every endeavor.
We'll obviously just have to wait and see.... though I really hate waiting !

Cobblestone or wood with coal / torch.
Thank you for having TOTALLY MISS THE POINT. They are going to be of a nonrenewable resource since they are ment to be limited. There was no Wood torches that was anything other then for decoration and Stone is stupid. WHO the heck would carry around a stone lantern. Current torches are limted by Coal.
The lanterns most likely will be made from at least three iron bars along with glass and only give 1-4 lanterns as a result. The change is to make us THINK about placing down a lightsource instead of spamming it. If Notch was happy with us spamming lightsources like we are now, then he wouldn't be making this change.
So yes, Lanters WILL be from a nonrenewable resource, and will most likely use more and more rare nonrenewable resources then torches ans that is the point of lanterns.
Edit: Clearing some things up, While there HAS been stone lanterns in histroy, none of the stone lanterns was never a "Pick me up and carry me around" thing. It was usally a large stone structer in a park or along a path that a person couldn't carry. While there was a few wood lanterns, more common materials for lanterns has always been metal or bone. I'm guessing in the early days, having flamable wood near an open flame didn't work out so well. Even the old lanterns that was made out of wood, had the insides lined with a metal leaf.
Point still stands that we will most likely use at least 1 bar of iron for lanterns. I'm just fighting for the choice to use gold as well.
This would be too annoying. Spending hours getting lost in caves without a flint n steel to relight all your torches just to get a infinite light source is too annoying.
Also, that different source idea doesn't make much sense.
A good use for gold would be a gold watch that tells time better then whatever watch he gives us.
Thats smart.
Make gold stuff thats better then iron stuff
Like gold doors. That take longer to destroy. or cant be destroyd by destroying the blok underneath
or golden buckets. that deploy 2 sources instead of one.
Or a golden flint n steel. that lasts twice as long
Btw. your avatar reminds me of somthing... Is it a drawing. or does it come from somthing?
gold is soft in real life so the door/flint&steel would work. The bucket idea is wonderful for people who like to farm.
I suggested a watch because gold works well with electricty so why not make upgrade a normal lanterns with a gold lantern that has a better distance then a normal lantern, it would be perfect for houses.
p.s My avatar is a drawing of a character that came from an anime, I only got it because it looks cool
you gotta think more along the lines of realism and challenge, the latern will most likely be something you pick up and take with you from place to place as neccessary, also this gives more use to the Flint and Steel, rather than as just a griefing device or garbage disposal.(also whoever suggested a a Flint and gold, go pick up a science book) so people will need to have one of those handy when setting out for an adventure, the sense of entitlement around your being able to easily obtain the ingredients is just baffling. I for one am predicting the watch will require both gold and diamond. Hopefully the trade off will give the latern a greater area of luminence, as well as the extinquished torches helping to recognize areas you've recently visited versus old tunnels that have been picked clean long ago.
Chandelier, for the fancy people who have too much gold. Can only be hung from the ceiling, but other than that is the same as a lantern. Possibly tad bit brighter since it has multiple torches.
This would give a good use to gold as a light source if you REALLY need one.
gold as a requirement for lanterns would be way too steep a price. If the recipe is that nuts you can expect that I'll skip lanterns entirely and simply invest in lots and lots of burning logs.
Even iron as a potential requirement has many people screaming. It could be neither is right. I expect it will be some higher tier material, but perhaps not iron because iron is already pretty badly overloaded.
I am thinking glass, iron, maybe a new material like oil. Wait and see, I doubt it will be as horrible as everyone seems to think.

Hmm...for me I have stacks of gold...just sitting there...not nearly as much diamond.
Wrong. I find more gold then diamond I have 30 gold and 10 diamond (not including my axe and pic axe).

that stone was wool, I think that it would give better use to gold, and diamond amplifies the moonlight :wink.gif:
