I don't get the problem with it. Just stock up on a ton of torches, they'll be switched with lanterns.
If the resources hurt you that much, use NBT Edit.
I am just going to restart my save when it comes out, but that's a good idea and if you want to do that, sure
I go through torches like wildfire. I have torches everywhere, and because of which I just decided to cheat in stacks of 255 of them in my inventory. I ran out of them.
I don't get why everyone says to use torches where you don't go often and to use lanturns for places you common. For me it would be the other way around.
If you're there a lot you can relight the torches, hopefully before anything spawns. If you're not there a torch could go out, and you'd never know it. Then one day, when you're organizing your inventory or something, BOOM, creeper comes up behind you from the dark depths of your untended home.

well obviously your house would fall under areas you go often

The idea is simply that you will explore a cave or some area for a while, then leave it FOREVER. Then you will not have wasted any lanterns. The torches will go out and life moves on. But for areas where you are always traveling, lanterns mean you never have to worry about relighting. You just go about your business as usual.

Use torches when you want a cheap lighting and use lanterns when you will be revisiting that area frequently.
I know you've all already said this but reading this whining is making me sick, and I wanted to get my professional opinion out there.
That is all.
