You know, I'm really not worried about lanterns using Iron. Yes, I expect they will but so what? The idea here is that lanterns won't be so cheap and easy that you can spam the entire map with them, you'll have to think a bit harder about how you want to use your resources.
Don't forget, that you still have both lava and fire available as light sources. Even with the new monsters and everything else, I'm really not that worried. The game is too easy as it is, some new hazards will be fun.
remember, iron is the second strongest material in the game. (gold is strong as wood and redstone is pointless) i wouldnt want notch to make iron too abundant, just abundant enough. lanterns would need cobblestone. (or the blood of creepers.)
I'm pretty sure the recipe is going to be way less difficult than anyone thinks.
Something like...

I'm going to go ahead and second that. Don't know why everyone thinks it's going to be massively expensive. Then again, it might just be, just wait for the patch...
Lanterns made of stone? Really?? Just because it is easier to aquire than iron? That would be a really bad way to adress this problem imho.
Maybe if it's made of smooth stone instead of cobblestone? Smooth stone is harder to get than cobblestone, but easier to get than iron.
I still don´t like it. It´s not because the material is too easy to get or something (as I said before, that problem should be easy to solve), it´s because it seems silly to me.
So far every recipe has been intuitive and somewhat realistic, and I never heard about lamps made of stone, except for those japanese lamps used as garden decoration (those would be nice to have, but should not be the standard issue lamp).
The issue is the lack of materials. stone is the most balanced material for this currently in the game. besides, you don't really see people with tools made out of stone. but I doubt anyone wants to go out mining in their shaft and return a day later with a house full of burnt out torches and creepers because they havn't found iron yet. Iron is too expensive.
also, they should look like this :
Well iron isn't supposed to be a walk outside and you see iron type thing, and as rare as it is, is fine cause the things you can make with it are awesome. I think the lantern should be in the shape of a bucket with a torch in the middle and possibly a stick on top of the torch for a handle type thing. Each of these should create 2 or 4
Iron is used for far too many things at the moment.
Since gold may potentially be used for alchemy in the future, I recommend adding a second or third ore that can be smelted with iron in order to create alloys. Alloys would yield more usable "pieces" per recipe; such as 3 iron bars plus 3 (new ore) bars = 9, or even 12 alloy bars.
Smooth stone instead of iron for lanterns in this case is also not a bad idea.
you do realize alchemy is the process of trying to turn other minerals or objects into gold... right?
in my oppinion, and for the sake of uncheapness, i think that the lanterns should use iron, cause if your gonna be a wuss and use a perma light source than you should at least have to sacrifice something, and even then irons not all that rare, i have like a double chest full of 64 stacks its annoying, and well if your really gonna whine about it so much make a bunch of torches now and make your own personal lantern farm, cause all existing torches are gonna be turned to lanterns anyway

Alchemy isn't just gold, that was just the most popular. Alchemy is just turning one element into another.
Gold was rare, lead was common. Hence, they became the two most used elements.
LIST OF SOLUTIONS!
1. Make Iron more common. (Could be bad news, iron swords would be EVERYWHERE on MP servers.)
2. Make new, more common ore. (Bronze, Brass? Could complicate MC more which I think isn't Notch's favorite idea.)
3. Use Smooth stone for Lanterns. (allows for a material that takes time to produce, but is still cheap enough and requires investment. Could be exploited, possibly, meaning you need a torch instead of coal for it, or tweaking final product output.)
4. Use Diamond for lanterns.
5. Make glass lanterns, but use slime balls for oil. (Could be a problem, but it means a rush to get to slime level and requires a difficulty level to achieve, which isn't really fair...is it?)
6. Clay lanterns? (Problem there being it's scarcity and people's tendencies to use it for their cozy brick houses.)

ehem, a lot of people would like to NOT have monsters spawn in their buildings. especialy when you like to build a lot. and I would rather not have to get a lot of iron (I suck at mining/ambient sounds scare bricks out of me) to light up my massive floating castle. and besides, a lot of people also like to go sperlunking in mines or even out in the open world. and they may not be able to find enough iron.

well the problem with that for the builders would be for them to do my second option and make a pre-update lantern farm with torches, but if its just gonna be easy to make with cheap materials then there would be no reason for the torch burning out update at all, and its a survival game its meant for the game itself to be against you, it will make it more fun for the people that dont only build, and it will give people with nothing else to do with thier iron to use it (plus a possible up to 6 iron isnt that much, especially since notch will probably have it make like 4 lanterns)
I agree. I posted a couple of times that they should be made of stone, not cobblestone, but stone, so you have to first smelt it then make the torch.

This. Lanterns shouldn't be too rare.
lanterns also shouldnt be too easy like that, there would be no real point to having the update then, i would meat in the middle and say they should use something not all that rare but rare enough (oh wait thats iron xP)

We can all complain after it's released.

That wouldn't be an advantage if you want to permenantly light a large maze of small corridors.
