I just hope that the lanterns will be harder to make but not require more of the already scarce resources like iron.
Actually, something like requiring a piece of glass and a 3x3 recipe ensures that you cannot craft them in a cave, from a box of scraps, might be pretty nice. It will make you put some thought into choosing supplies for your mining trip
I have never found iron to be in terribly short supply, but thats because i will only use an iron pic if needed to get another ore and other then that i only use stone tools.
In multiplayer people sometimes tend to scatter across the map. The world on my server (friends only, 8 players total) is already 135 mb. connecting all settlements will require 10km of railroad (for dual track).
we only have 6 km now, after lots of mining (grid mining, spelunking) and digging the tunnels for the subway

I'm with you on this too. Torches that go out will definitely add to the whole survival. And the ability to relight torches makes it fair. And unlit torches emitting 1 level of light is fine by me, allows some guidance on where it is, and also allows creatures to spawn there. And I don't see lanterns requiring too much either. I just can't wait to see it all. ^-^
I don't see why people whine about loosing infinite torches. Personally I play this game cause its dark and gritty, and provides many 'crap-my-pants' moments, and on the side, I get to play like its a giant box of Legos (plus zombies). This is my honest opinion about the game.
I have no feelings one way or another. I do like the idea of spelunking with torches, but I kinda like the way a castle looks all lit-up by guttering torches, but don't want to go around relighting them all the time. Ah well. I don't understand the sheer amount of whining about it, but I'm not really stoked either.
I do hope that the infinite-burning logs cheat never gets fixed. I really enjoy having the odd permanent fire going as decoration, I like building destroyed ruins with flickering flames.

Congratulations.
