It has recently come to my attention that a surprising number of people either do not know how to make an auto-closing door, or think it deals with redstone and set it aside as "too complex." I'm here to straighten this out.
The steps are quite simple:
1. Pick a doorway
Preferably a door that leads outside, as interior doors aren't going to let Creepers in

2. Place the door as normal
It is preferable you place it from OUTSIDE, so you can hit enemies through the door from inside

3. Place a pressure plate
Place the plate INSIDE, so that monsters can't open your door

And there you are, you're done. The plate automatically opens the door from inside and closes after you step through, and when entering from outside, the door will stay open until you step on the plate, causing it to close after you step off.
This simple system ensures that unless you open the door from outside and do not walk through, the door will never remain ajar, and this could mean the difference between crafting in peace and resting in peace.
Using this disables the option of attacking through the door. When you go up to the door to attack something on the other side, the door will open letting the enemy get to you. Although you could just go up to another floor and rain arrows on them.

I considered wiring up a second plate outside so the door WOULDN'T open if anyone was standing there, but then I decided I didn't want to be stuck inside my house every time a pig decided to walk on the plate or something.

A skewed pressure plate design helps with this.

It seems like no matter how or when you add the button or if the door is open or shut, the 2nd door always sets itself to be open when the other door is closed and closed when the other door is open. wtf? it makes no sense

There does not exist a "left door" and a "right door", only a "closed door" and an "open door". The left-side door that mirrors the right-side door is actually an open door facing sideways, not a closed door facing the opposite way.

There does not exist a "left door" and a "right door", only a "closed door" and an "open door". The left-side door that mirrors the right-side door is actually an open door facing sideways, not a closed door facing the opposite way.
