I did a scan on my world and the nearest reeds were on the complete other side, so without massively expanding my map I can't get any either. It kinda sucks but, I'm not really heartbroken over it... worst case scenario I guess I could semi-cheat and spawn one and farm them from there.
On my map, both reeds and cacti were rare enough that I hadn't run into any within walking distance of my base. Per the previous poster, take a boat out, and go in a straight line (towards sunrise/sunset if you want to be able to get back home without a compass). You generate new map chunks as soon as you move past explored territory; some of these will have reeds.
I ran into an island with both cacti and reeds after about 5 minutes of searching. Once you have these in-hand, plant them. Cacti can be placed on top of any sand block, and reeds can be placed on any dirt block adjacent to water. They'll grow from 1-high to 3-high very quickly. Harvest them and repeat, and you'll soon have far more of both than you could ever want.
I'm just wishing flowers could be duplicated as easily (I want to make a flowerbed without stripping the rest of the landscape of them).
1. Someone said they scanned their map. What did you use? I haven't been able to find an actionable program as of yet.
2. Everyone seems to say that the best bet is to take a boat out and search. My problem is that my mighty fortress that I've been working on for months is in a snow world. I understand that makes reeds more "rare". But I have expanded my map enormously and haven't found any. Most available water sources are frozen. So I guess my question is, since I very much want a library in my castle, and since I can't seem to find any reeds anywhere, is there a program I can use to implant a single reed on one of my worlds? I don't want to screw up my save or anything I just really want a damn library!

The difference between a STRIP mine and a SURFACE mine
wither that, or you obviously dont explore enough, and your perspective is ****ed up to no end because you have a small ass map.
