Hey folks. I'm just looking for some tipes on farming using torches and lava. I've looked everywhere but i cant find a thing on the subject.
Anyway, i have two farms. One is above ground with a two block high water source, torches on the walls around the crops, and a glass roof for sunlight during the day.
I also have another farm underground. It's only small, but it has lava above and on all sides along with torches to provide lighting (And water of course).
Neither farm is dooing very well; some of the crops in my aboveground farm don't grow properly, and the underground farm takes about a week in minecraft time to grow to full.
Lava is lava - It destroys everything flammable it touches, and all objects dropped by the player. :'(
I could put it right next to the crops, but where would i put the water, and where would i walk? Anyone have a pair of magma resistant boots? :biggrin.gif:
Even then, water still affects up to 3 blocks away. It doesn't have to be adjacent. Personally I use torches because they are much more accessible and far less dangerous.
I had a farm (i deleted the save tho :C), it looked like this:
it was a checkerboard pattern, 16 x 16. It's a little hard to walk around in, but I would get crops every minute or so. It also had a glass ceiling about 16 or so blocks high (it was once the side of a hill)

How far away are the torches from the crops?
Are you standing on the crops?
Is water touching every crop?
EDIT: I'll get some screenies in a few minutes
and mine grows fine

Make a "tub" put water at the bottom, wood over the water, and dirt on the wood. Water will keep the dirt wet, and wont get in the way.

I usually use cobble myself
Ill have to test it, but I've made water glow before with the help of lava, so I wonder if I can grow crops with no visible light, I should be able to
