Minecon has brought much news about the future of Minecraft, including the 1.5 update, now dubbed "The Redstone Update". Interested, I looked on the Minecraft Wiki, and was surprised to see the possibility of new nether content including new ores, nether brick and netherrack slabs, and a "Nether Furnace" (which I'm guessing will be made of nether brick).
According to the wiki, the new ore(s) will be an ingredient in the planned new redstone blocks, such as a capacitor block or the planned Mod API countdown block, which will reset its counter every day.
Anyway, I think the nether could use the new content, but I am still not entirely used to 1.4... maybe I'll be ready by January.
Does anyone have a source for the Nether Furnace bulletpoint on the wiki? I hadn't heard of it at all during the MineCon panels, so I don't know where it could have come up.
I would really, really like a citation here. Totally OK with such a thing being added though. More expensive than a furnace, but it smelts 10 or 12 items per coal.
If netherack burns forever...why can't we use it in our furnaces?

When Mojang came out with the Nether,it was like some crazy idea he had in a dream or something, reason being,it had almost no use whatsoever! There are many things that are pathetically obvious that they should add,one of those being nether ores. The Nether is still doesn't have many uses for being its own world. I'm glad they are finally getting to it.

Not many. Except the.. err fact that it's the basis for almost all potions, and the Beacon, and so on.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

They very recently came out with the beacon, and if you are a potion guy,I respect that, but I never have really any reason to go into the Nether, what I want to see is the Nether a place where a good player can live and thrive in the Nether, and come out to trade with Overworld Minecrafters. Also notice that I said when the Nether FIRST came out. I will occasionally venture into there for blaze rods and glowstone and such, but not for much else.
Also note that this is my opinion, and I don't expect everyone to agree with me.
there is a bit of things mentioned including a Nether based ORE so there could be LOTS of possible applications and they mentioned NETHERBRICK HALFSLABS!

probably because netherack doesnt burn hot enough.
Finally!
And a nether specific ore?
Yes!
Cause that'll be extremely overpowered.

Don't even mention that thing. I've been trying to block it out from my mind. It's just... So awful.
